Homemade CAI

Well summer is coming.... and heat soak is coming too. I had R2C short arms and did not want to deal with it again this summer. And did not want to spend another+$400 for another intake..

Ebay had -25% of everything coupon last week, so decided to do some spending. Bought aluminum tubing with silicone couplers and ss clamps (i guess it is called turbo kit) AEM filters and Vibrant 10950 Aluminum Bellmouth Velocity Stacks LOL.

Here is da result:

Old + New

Look at this huge velocity stack LOL

Final result

Stuff From catch cans. Not sexy at all

Looks like a nice install that's well supported. Are those runners from your R2C? What did the other parts total out to $$$?

Yes, they are R2C.
Now about the parts..... I could go cheap, add piping and reuse R2C filters.
Piping and one extra silicone sleeve was $90 -25% Ebay coupon. Totals to whooping $67.

But where i saved money on one end, i spend on other...I am strong believer in filter media and velocity stacks.
  • Filters 2X$48, And this is with coupon. Nice and huge...
  • Velocity stacks 2X$25 and they are awesome, high quality.
  • And most overpriced item..... 2X38$ for filter sleeves. not necessary, but they are waterproof....

Some people might say you could go with Takeda, but i dont like theirs filter. So whatever CAI i would go, on top of that i would add filter cost and maybe velocity stacks..

Want to give my quick thoughts:
  • Car feels so much better. it is like driving different car now.
  • Butt dyno confirmed, HP and torque increase down low and up in rpm rage.
  • There is myth floating around, that short arm is better for every day driving, because it is more responsive... Bull****, not true. CAI is much more responsive compared to R2C and most I can feel it down low.
  • Everybody who want to buy short arm, dont do it, it is not worth it. Besides awesome sound, it just sucks hot air and engine is losing power.
  • I dont think that many, or anyone at all, will convert theirs R2C to CAI, but this is probably my best 4 hours spend doing something. Just a big WOW. Cant wait to drive my car every morning

Hey OP is it possible to get some links added to the thread to show where others (including myself) can get these products? I recently picked up an incomplete typhoon setup and I'd rather just do what you did instead. Thanks

You can get universal intake pipes from autozone or Amazon. I would buy filter mesh bag that goes on filter. Keeps bugs and crap from getting into filter so you dont clean as often since you're running it behind the grill

here you go, link for piping :
https://www.ebay.com/itm/2-5-Univers...wAAOSwtkVc~ceQ

Filters I used, but there are cheaper options (this filter requires velocity stack):
https://www.amazon.com/AEM-21-209DBF-Universal-DryFlow-Clamp/dp/B004ZQUSBQ/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=AEM+21-209DBF&qid=1562196398&s=gateway&sr=8-1 https://www.amazon.com/AEM-21-209DBF-Universal-DryFlow-Clamp/dp/B004ZQUSBQ/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=AEM+21-209DBF&qid=1562196398&s=gateway&sr=8-1

Two stacks (optional):
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002TULV52/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002TULV52/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And longer silicone X2 tube if you dont want to drill firewall (optional):
