throttle body cleaning question

decided to clean my throttle bodies today at 30k miles any idea how to get this black stuff off the edges could it be corrosion? i sprayed a ton of carb cleaner and wiped with a microfiber towel. i posted before and after pics below theres a lil difference but im not happy with it.

You're going to have to open the butterfly to get the edges clean.

Exactly what Jsolo said. What I did was I opened the valve just a TINY bit and placed a piece of paper towel there and soaked the heck out of it with carb cleaner. It's hard to clean but the black stuff is just carb build up and they will come off with some scrubbing.

and i heard that if you move the butterfly then youll have to relearn the idle. what did you use to scrub it off toothbrush?

When I did it I opened the valve to clean it. I just used a microfiber towel and fed it in one side and moved it back and forth, then held one side of the valve open with my left and cleaned the other side with my right. it was pretty easy. Once I started the car back up it revved a few hundred rpm by itself for about 30 seconds then everything went back to normal. It was about a month ago and I haven't had any issues with the throttle since (knock on wood). I did not do the ECU reset afterwards.

I have cleaned my TB twice. Once the way pictured in yours and the second time I thought screw it and moved the valve to clean the carbon on the edges and on the housing itself. You clearly see an outline of soot as soon as the butterfly moves.

First cleaning felt a small change and acceleration was better. Second cleaning felt a HUGE difference, not just acceleration but MPG went up and overall pep in car for about two months.

Cleaned it for the first time a few weeks ago at ~ 37k miles
Felt the difference in acceleration and better MPG.
Still has some black stuff though as in the pic shown in post 1.
Anyone tried using a brush?

yes i actually did notice a lil difference. i did ecu reset after too tho. ill try again this weekend

what kind of cleaner you guys use? i used deep creep

I did not ECU reset after cleaning. I used Throttle Body cleaner, comes in a can that looks like Brake Clean.

Did anyone ever try to Press the Gas pedal in the car without car running....Like Just push the Start button to on....like Accessory On...No starting engine..to see if the Butterfly's move that way? Instead or Moving the butterfly's by hand and messing up the Idle?? My Frnd's a Tech at Infifniti...He told me to try that way first to see if it works, But I never had time to try yet.....

I have a friend who is a mechanic at Acura, the way they clean throttle bodies are they remove the air intake tube only, throttle body is still connected to the engine, turn the engine on, have someone light rev the motor while he sprays throttle body cleaner in the opening. The engine will suck in the throttle body cleaner and will combust with the air/fuel mixture.

What do you guys think of this method? It won't be as clean as physically wiping down the surfaces though.

I would rather do it the way it has been suggested here. Mechanics are pressed for time so they tend to do things quickly rather than thoroughly.
For us owners to take a weekend to do something minor is fine but working in a shop you may get reamed or let go for it.
