Any idea what the deal with the opening/vent in the middle of the diffuser is for?

For maximum residual air flow of course.

I believe its only cosmetic and nothing more.

I also installed mine today. I put a grill behind my opening, then when I installed it I got scared it would scratch my bumper and removed it. I did have a few cosmetic issues with my diffuser but installation was easy. Here are a few pics.

I haven't installed mine yet, but I'd definitely use them, the 3M tape is not enough to hold the thing forever.

I'd hate to see you lose that on the highway.

The 3M tape is really strong. That thing isn't going anywhere, if you install it correctly. Make sure you clean the area well with alcohol. I used some 3M adhesive promoter as well. The 2 clips doesn't do much, and if the 3M tape fails, the clips definitely won't hold your diffuser in place.

So with all this chat about the two clips...where exactly do they go? I'm in the painting process on mine, so haven't installed it yet. It would be nice to know ahead of time about the installation position of these illusive 'clips'.

they go on the 2 outer corners of the diffuser. They clip on to the bottom of your bumper. You'll see when you get down there. It's a very easy install.

Thanks Sniper, I already installed it without the clips, before reading your message. Guess I need to have a look. Just clip 'em on, no screws? Was I suppose to get directions? I would have never guessed where they were suppose to go.

Here's a pic of the finished install:
