Where does this wire go?
 

Found this hanging wire connected to the passenger side of the engine bay. Other end is rusted off and have no idea where it goes. Can't find it in the FSM either. It's an 09 G37X sedan.

Anyone know?

That looks like a grounding wire for the battery, or something.

may have found it. looks like it goes to the exhaust manifold shield.

I find this odd, but possible. Can anyone confirm?

I don't have direct evidence, but I do know this. You have not mentioned any OBDC codes so it's not a signal wire. You'll have to follow your wire to see if it's bolted to the heat shield. I suspect it is.

Any idea why a wire would be connected from the body to the heat shield? I don't see the usefulness of this.

btw, I have a bunch of codes. In progress of doing the galley gaskets.

Ground wire.

Good to ground every part of the engine to the chassis if possible. Can avoid all kinds of weird electrical problems.

Simple grounding (removing ground level differences between dissimilar metals to reduce corrosion).

That is because there are *three* metals there - cast iron for the exhaust manifold, whatever tin the heat shield is made of (probably stainless steel), and the non-stainless screw/bolt. Too much galvanic action. Best thing to do if buying new would be to pull the stock bolts and replace with stainless, while things are still nice and clean. Woulda coulda shoulda...

Just for fun I went to infiniti to get a new wire. Parts guy didn't have it, nor did he know where it connected on the other end.

Unfortunately, it isn't just Infiniti who does this. I know Mitsubishi has done this in the past too. Blows my mind that any manufacturer has not picked up on connecting anything to exhaust related parts is a bad idea.
