Reviewing a Vehicle I'm about to buy
Hello,
I'm currently going through the history of this vehicle I'm about to buy. During its latest emission test back in August 17, 2017, it has FAILED EMISSION INSPECTION and PASSED EMISSION INSPECTION right below it. This car is being sold from a MINI dealership. Any recommendations? |
what car is it?
|
Hello. What exact vehicle are you buying? Coupe, sedan, X? How many miles on it? Maybe you can ask the Mini dealership why it failed and then passed emissions? Sometimes it’s something meager like the battery was disconnected, dead, or replaced, and it needed to complete all the OBD2 drive cycle monitors before it would pass. Different states have different emissions standards too. |
Some states have tighter standards than the federal EPA requirements and that's why you'll see California or New York car. I'll bet it was a battery or O2 sensor replacement. Heck, maybe just the gas cap was loose.
|
That happened to me with a gas cap failure.

I didn't know there were so many replies! I never got a notification...
It is a 2013 G37S with 36,000 miles. |
Also, on the AutoCheck Vehicle History Report, for the model, it shows:
IPL G Base / Journey / Sport What does this mean? I bought this car thinking it was a G37S (Sport). |
don't worry about anything. Its really common for cars to fail smog in california. for our cars it's a simple as having the battery unplugged for too long before the smog test. I had to drive my car through a whole tank before it would pass smog when I left the battery unplugged. the car needs time to adjust to cali gas.

Federal standard requires 50 start-ups before the test will pass after a battery disconnect. I have no idea if Kalifornia is stricter.
