Anyone know why Infiniti can't make their A/C units run on pure electric?
As most of you guys know that when using your A/C while driving you can feel a little lag in performance. Since every car company try's to get the best mpg's why can't they make a car that only uses electric to run the a/c's.
I know it sounds like a stupid idea but Tesla and alot of other pure electric car's are doing it. Any thought? |
Electricity has to come from someplace. In the case of a gasoline engine, it's the alternator. What drives the alternator - the engine. I can possibly see this implemented in a hybrid as you already have batteries.

I remember the highest trim Prius having solar cells on the roof that were dedicated to powering the A/C before you got into the car. But the cost just didn't justify the need.

Lol i have some experience with solar cells and you need waaay more solar cells than can fit on a car roof (Prius or whatever...) to get the AC to work from solar power alone.
That solar cells can charge an accumulator and the AC can run for some time from that accumulator. But don't bet to run the AC from solar power all the time. It need some additional power from engine or the main car battery (on electric cars) to run the AC all the time. On G37 and other cars with big engines, you won't feel the difference in power with AC on or off. On cars with engines below 2 liters, there is a small difference. On cars with engines below 1.3 liters you can really feel the difference. But that's not the case with G37. Yes. they can use an electric compressor for AC on G37. but then, more power will be lost, due to: -power dissipated on the alternator (friction, heat, alternator efficiency), -wires from the alternator to AC compressor, -then the power lost on the compressor electric motor (again, friction heat, motor efficiency) There is no such thing like perfect alternator or perfect motor with 100% efficiency |
i'd gladly give up 15hp if it didn't pour hot air on my feet.
