Car won't start - Battery?
 

It's been 2 days since I drove my car, and hot 85 degree weather in the garage. I got in this morning, and the car won't recognize the key. Dash gave me a pic indicating that I should put the key in the slot next to the trunk release. I did that and the dash gave me the usual sign to press the brake and start the car. When I did that, it didn't start. It just said "no key". I had the same result with my spare key as well. None of the buttons on the key fobs work either.


Could it be the car battery?
Could it be the batteries in the key fobs? Should start when they're in the slot right?
Could it be a bigger issue?

Everything in the manual states that the slot is for when the battery is low, but nothing states what would happen if the battery is dead. Since it's saying no key, your best bet...spend $5 and get a new 2032 battery and replace the one in your key. That will tell you if that's the problem.

If your 09 still has the original battery, its time to replace it.

You can test the individual cells with a battery hydrometer. About $10.00

By chance did it give you a yellow key light on indicator on the dash?

I don't recall seeing the color yellow on my dash. So I don't think I had that indicator.

Problem was resolved with changing batteries in key fobs, but I agree, it's time to test, and probably change the car battery.

So now my question, the slot on the dash, if it doesn't work when the key fob battery is dead, what is it for? Simply for when the battery is low? I've found that even with the low battery warning, the car works fine. No need to put the fob in the slot in those situations.

I have had times when the battery was so low that I could not start the car without placing it in the slot. But it would allow me to open the door using the button on the door handle okay. Best bet is when the dash tells you the battery is low, get it changed out. It's inexpensive and will just save you some headaches. Of course, I had assumed that a dead fob battery would still start the car if placed in the slot, but I guess not. Good information to know.

Never seen both key fob batteries go out at the same time. Maybe you should check into it a little more before you get stranded. Your antenna in the car which links the key to the ignition could be going bad. Happened in an old 350z i had. Its called the NATS antenna

Putting the iKey in the "key slot" should allow you to start the car even if there is no battery at all in the iKey It's like the physical keys of recent years which had "chips"; the car can scan an iKey in the slot and recognize it as "registered". It seems the iKey has two systems - one for normal battery powered operations and one for this passive IVIS or NATS ID when needed. Registering a new iKey should teach the car both of these codes.
