Driver Seatbelt Locked
Hey guys, my driver side seatbelt just locked up on me last night. The mechanism won't release the belt so I can't buckle up! Any suggestions?

While that would be funny, I wasn't stuck inside the car. I finished work for the day, hopped in my car and it was just locked; I couldn't pull it forward to buckle up. Didn't do anything; car was just sitting in the parking lot all day. It was working fine before that.

Oh, you mean it was locked in the fully retracted position. I thought you were saying that it was locked while you were wearing it. Did you try yanking it really hard to make it release (that's what she said!)? If it doesn't extend, take it straight to the dealership and they will replace it with a new one. Be careful and hopefully you don't get a ticket if wearing it is required in Toronto.

I tried everything... yanking it, wiggling it, pulling it from side to side, whispering sweet nothings to it and nothing worked. I even outright kicked it a few times. My car is no longer under warranty, roughly how much am I looking at to replace it?
Edit: of course wearing your seatbelt is required haha. We Canucks aren't that crazy lol.

You're covered. Seat belt warranty is 10 years/unlimited miles.

Fixed it! Followed this guide (link). In my case, there was a small spring that had popped off its holder. I just removed the black plastic piece covering the white gear bits and positioned the spring where it belonged. Problem solved. Also to note for those interested, 2008 G37 coupe has two bolts holding the belt mechanism in place and you do not need to remove the seats. Just fold them down for better access to the panel while working. It literally took me no more then 30 minutes to fix. Sorry for no d.i.y.

Not 100% sure this applies to Infiniti but Nissan has a lifetime warranty on seat belts. I had a seatbelt do the same thing on a 2000 Maxima a few years ago and the Nissan replaced it for free.
Edit: Confirmed, Infiniti's seat belts do have a lifetime warranty. I totally understand not wanting to take your car to the stealership because I'm the same way but at the same time if you mess it up and it doesn't lock if you get in an accident it could mean your life. I personally would just prefer to have Infiniti put a whole new unit in.

Sorry. It was nearly two years ago that I fixed my seatbelt. I don't remember where the spring goes. If I recall, there's really only one place it can go. Just work at it. If you post up some pics, I'll help you.

I took it apart this morning so I could show you. This is also for future reference for anyone else who encounters this issue.
Important:
As others have reported, Nissan offers a lifetime warranty on their seatbelts. I highly advise you take your seatbelt to an authorized Infiniti dealer and have them replace it. At the very least, call and ask questions. This is your life we're talking about so use this guide at your own discretion.
Tools required:
- Ratchet (socket wrench)
- 14mm socket
- 10mm socket
Notes/Tips:
Step 1: Slide the front seat forward and tilt it towards the dash to create some work space.
Step 2: Pop the rear panel partially off so as to get access to the seat-belt tensioner.
Step 3: You will need to remove a 14mm bolt (lower) and a 10mm bolt (top) in order to remove the tensioner unit.
Note: there is a clear cover over this part, just pop it off.
Step 4: Go further by removing the black plastic cover. There are a couple of these little clips that can be easily unhooked.
Underneath the black cover you'll find a small spring. In my case, this spring became dislodged and was no longer sitting properly.
Step 5: Place the spring exactly as shown in this photo.

Notes/Tips:
- Do not lose the ball bearing.
- Be careful while removing the two bolts. Do not drop them or you'll have a hard time getting at them. So take your time!
- Wear some leather work gloves. There's quite a bit of sharp metal edges behind there and some good odds you'll slice yourself up.
- After you've fixed the spring, confirm it is working properly before re-installing it. Slowy pull and release on the seatbelt; check that it is functioning properly. Then, quickly tug on the belt to ensure it locks properly. Should everything work normally again, re-install the tensioner. If your belt is not locking, PLEASE DO NOT put it back in your car. If you get into an accident, it will not lock properly and you could get seriously hurt.
