Question Engine RPM 3K@80MPH - Really???

So I'm two months into being an owner of a '10 6MT Sedan. For the last eight years I've driven an '02 maxima se 6mt which has the predecessor engine to G37. Just can't get use the high rpm in the G. Cruising in 6th gear at 80 mph my G is at 3k rpm. In the max it was about 2300 in 6th gear. Just curious to know what other 6mt owners experience as far as as rpm cruising in 6th gear.

Everyone will be the same since all the cars have the same transmission and differential. The only variance would be for those few who have changed the rear gear. Theirs will be about 10% higher.

You get used to it. I used to drive a 5.7L z28 that was about 1800 rpm at 60 mph. I then got a bike that did 60mph ~4K rpm. 80 Mph was somewhere around 5K. The vq37 likes to rev Don't deny it this. As you probably discovered, it doesn't take a whole lot of throttle to pass at 80 either as you're right near the power band.

They probably could have designed different gear ratios into the G trans rather than having it be a direct duplicate of the 370z. This way parts are a whole lot cheaper. I think in top gear, between 65-70 is where you get your best mpg. I've seen as high as 27-28 on sustained long distance trips. Closer to 25 if there are hills involved.

That is exactly what my RPMs are in my current G37S as well as my previous 06 G35

If you ever have an occasion to drive a G37X automatic 7 speed the RPMs are somewhat lower at 80 MPH

A VQ37HR is barely breathing ay 3K!!
At least you'll hit the speed limiter way before the rev limiter!!

yea. was looking into this earlier. Would be interesting if someone comes up with a mod tranny where top gear is a very tall over drive gear. OR, one like the 7 gear transmission in the new 911s

Wow, really? Granted I have a 7AT, but I feel like 6th and 7th are very tall. Maybe too tall to be useful. I spend a lot of time in DS mode on the freeway just because of this.

I agree with the poster that said 3k is relatively low.

mine is about 3150rpm at 80mph but i'm running 245/40/19 front & 275/35/19 rear so it might be different from stock but i'd like to know why you think it low?

I'm running a few ticks over 2,500 rpm at 80 mph in my G Sedan w/ 7AT. I'm running 19" wheels with 245/40-19's up front and 275/35-19's in the rear.
