g37: service engine soon

I recently picked up my car around monday of last week and today I noticed the service engine soon light come up. Before I did my research I emailed my dealer and he told me that the gas cap may be the problem. So I made sure I heard three clicks, and drove around 20 miles. The light was still on so I did a ecu reset and now the light is off. Should I be worried that I reset the ecu to a different problem other then the gas cap?

Always find out what code is triggering a CEL before resetting it. Now there's no way to know what the problem was. If your gas cap wasn't off or loose before you tightened it, that probably wasn't it.

When the light comes back on, read it with an OBD diagnostics tool to find out what the problem is.

I had an oil change done by my dealer and when I picked up my G, the CEL came on. They told me the same thing, to check my gas cap. Which the gas cap was securely tightened. So I called back and they told me to bring it back.

Just bring your car back to the dealer if they did some work on it, it is their problem that the CEL went off.

Also I forget what caused the issue, would need to find the paper work for it.

Alright, next time the light comes on I will find out the code. Also I just recently picked up the car and zero work wash done to it at the dealership. The CEL went off today and the last time I filled my gas was this past Sunday. The light had not shown up until 4 days after my gas cap was touched. It would definitely not be a problem with the gas cap then right?

Possibly if it were loose. It doesn't trigger a CEL immediately.

Yeah I also read in another post that it took a bit of time for the CEL to turn off, once they tightened their gas cap. I just refueled my car so hopefully the light won't come on.

So my service light came up again and I got the code read. It was a p0101 and I was wondering if anyone knew what this code meant. I looked online and it said it could be the intake. I called the dealership for service and I'm going to go in this Saturday. Just wanted to know in advance what p0101 exactly is or if anyone had the same problem.

Thanks for the site, and did this personally happen to you? I want to know so badly how this can be fixed, as I don't want the dealership just reseting my ecu lol.

additionally, I dropped a bolt while taking off my front grill and that bolt fell into the front part of the engine bay but more closer to the right side air intake. Could this in anyway cause the p1010?

doubtful unless the bolt managed to get inside the intake somehow, but then you'd likely have much bigger problems. Likely you just have a dirty MAF sensor. Did you install intakes recently or do any other mods/repairs?

No nothing, I just picked up the car new off the lot around 3 weeks ago. The code reading I got from autozone said: troubleshooting p0101, sensor circuit range/performance probable cause. 1: open or short circuit condition, 2: poor electrical connection, 3: vacuum leak, 4: faulty MAF sensor. And zero mods, I just too the air intake out and no bolt was found in both. I'm just worried that the dropped bolt may void my warranty while they try and fix the code reading.

I'm going this saturday to drop off my car. This is the earliest they can schedule me in , but I will keep you guys updated. And please feel free to add your inputs on what could cause this problem. I tend to worry more then usual people, so I feel like i'm putting to much thought into this.

Just don't mention you dropped a bolt when you bring it in. Not that this would void your warranty at all. Only way they would do that is if it managed to get sucked in the engine and they could prove you caused that issue. Either way your air filters would have prevented it from getting sucked in unless you took them out for some reason.

If you're under warranty you won't have any problems.

I'd say the code you are experiencing are from dirty MAF sensors - has happened to me on previous vehicles. A quick cleaning restores the functionality of the sensor and usually allows for better air flow readings by the computer. Clean sensors are happy sensors.
