Redline 5W30 Review from an amateur's perspective
 

Evening All,

Recently had the opportunity to throw some Redline 5W30 Motor Oil into the G. Now, mind you that I am NOT some sort of oil guru, and my "report" is only based on how my car felt in response to the Redline (2010 G37S Sedan 6MT). Anyways, the biggest noticeable difference that I'm sure many of you will be glad to hear is GAS MILEAGE. I ran the break in motor oil (or whatever its equivalent was when I first purchased the car with 6 miles on the odometer), and swapped it out with Infiniti of Kirkland first "service free" oil (Kendall semi-blend; terrible might I add). During the break in period, I averaged about 400 miles a tank, and then immediately following the oil change with the Kendall semi-synthetic blend, I averaged ~300 miles per tank. In addition to the added engine noise, that almost sounded like metal on metal (not quite) chatter, rougher idling, and struggling (sounded like the engine was working harder) high rpm speeds, the 2nd free oil change from the dealer served a temporary purpose: to flush out metal from the break in period. I ran it for about 2000 miles, before I had enough. Coming out, the oil looked greasy and almost contaminated with gasoline (odd color that you see in water+oil); I've never seen that in Mobil 1, Pennzoil, Royal Purple or Amsoil products. The Redline I put in averaged me about ~230 miles on TWENTY-FIVE DOLLARS (half a tank) of gas @ $3.25 (you do the math). I'm on the my first full tank of Chevron 92 Octane, and I'll report back to you all what I end up getting on a full tank; I do a lot of city driving and I don't take it easy, unfortunately. In addition, Redline seems to be quieting the engine down quite a bit; none of that metal on metal noise and chatter like from the Kendall...sounds buttery smooth.

Price wise, is it worth while? YES, especially if you get it @ cost through an awesome friend :).
Performance? Definitely an improvement over the Kendall, obviously, but overall? Not really...

I also put Redline with a K&N oil filter in my '09 G37 at the first oil change. I noticed no difference whatsoever. Mileage is very close, maybe slightly better, to what is was but the difference could be attributed driving a more conservatively. I can't notice any difference in the sound of the engine and I do I pay very close attention to the sound. I believe it's good oil and will continue to use it but only because I think it is top notch oil and it will hopefully help the engine last longer.

I'm using Redline for her G. I can't comment on the mileage because I don't drive the car consistantly enough. I can say the car idles smoother and with less noise.

how are you guys getting such amazing gas mileage? i get approx 310miles (500km) per tank. i fillup approx 15.8 gallon (60litres).

there are SO many factors that go into gas mileage (how the car is driven, avg speed, oil, octane, different gas stations, traffic, etc)

try a different gas station. I have noticed obvious difference in mileage per tank when using different stations in exact same driving conditions. I also use 93 octane

Using standard dealer oil. Got 22.8 mpg using BP 93 octane on the last tank. Just hit 5900 miles today.

393 was the total outcome. not the best, but certainly not bad in my book.

what's the "standard dealer oil?"

I don't think the OP is getting much better than you. Probably just putting more than 15.8 gallons in the tank at 400 miles.

I've gotten around 20-22mpg using Nissan ester or (way less expensive) Eneos. I sometimes fill up when it's over 400 but then I'm putting in more than 18 gallons in. So nothing really amazing or that much better than you're getting. I'd venture to guess the brand of oil won't make more than .5 mpg difference at best. But there's no way to hold everything else equal so it's impossible to tell.

I think they're (ray catena infiniti of bridgewater) using nissan ester but i'm not 100% sure. I'm planning on having the oil changed every 3750 miles so conventional is fine with me.

went on a small road trip with a few friends. would you guys believe me if i used up an entire tank and put just shy of 500 miles on one tank? :) okay, well with a 3/8th of a tank left, i had ~459 miles...so i think 500 would've been achievable?

It's possible. In theory if you're all hwy you could squeeze 25 mpg using all 20 gallons for 500 miles.

I get 350kms per tank at best lol :D

I have seen people reporting 27+ MPG on long road trips. So 500 miles for one tank is not surprising.

check your mpg and avg mph status on your dash trip computer. if your averaging low mph you will have poor mpg. mine shows a 22.7 miles per hour average and im getting 17.9 miles per gallon at that rate. it might be interesting to start a thread with this title "lets see your avg mph/mpg stats"
