Belt squeeling noise on cold start

I was just wondering If I need to replace my belt at all or if its normal.

Video of cold start belt squeel-

Belt after the car being warm for awhile-

Belt inspection

I started to notice that my belt starts to squeel when I start it while cold. Was wondering if I need to replace the belt or not.

Start the car then rub a bar of soap against the sides of the belt.

Will that actually help stop the squeeling? Also does the belt still look good?

The belt looks okay but looks can be deceiving. And yes, the soap trick works. It's a very old-school way of delaying the inevitable.

The soap let's you know if it's the belt or tensioner I'd just replace both

If you go anywhere near the belt with the car running, be mindful of your fingers.

How do you know which to replace?

slartibartfast 03-13-2018 12:17 PM

If the squealing stops after you apply soap, then the belt is bad. If not, then it's the tensioner.

Should be an indicator on the tensioner that is somewhat of a tell tale if it's time to replace the belt.

I went thru the same thing few months back - squeeling loud at cold starts and then it would be quiet when the engine gets warmed up. Changed my belt since it was over due but it didn't help - Next was Power steering Pump - Replaced that with no luck - The squeeling noise wasnt as bad after I replaced my pump - flushed my steering fluid and radiator fluid the same day but still no luck with the squeeling noise.

..............

and then one day it just automatically went away - Its been 3 weeks I havent heard that noise lolol

Not sure what this is but all my friends with the G37 made the same noise for few days when it was extremely cold.

Not sure what t F its all about

Belt tensioner

Do you have a DIY for belt tensioner and belt change?

I haven't even replaced the belt yet but the noise has stopped ever since it got warmer out. I'm still going to replace the belt. Did you change the belt yourself?

Dan G37 03-15-2018 11:43 AM

Has anyone else looked into the GATES K070795RPM belt? https://www.carid.com/gates/racing-m...070795rpm.html

Its more heat resistant also with the strength to transmit load more accurately with less vibration.

Does anyone know if its worth the extra 30$? Wondering if any other members here got the RPM belt from Gates.

^ Interesting! might use that belt when I change it next. I just replaced mine with the regular Gates belt.

On a side note, anyone wanting to replace the smooth idler pulley will have a hard time finding the correct part. The bolt on the Gates smooth pulley is too small. Looks like the other brands follow suite. OEM and the one from Z1 might be the only correct ones. Ended up using the factory washers, spacers, and bolt. The grooved pulleys from gates were fine.
