aftermarket / affordable catalytic converters?
Hey guys ,
So long story short, I have this annoying rattling noise from one of my catalytic converters on my G37sX coupe. happens only at low RPM and it is not from heat shield, I take it my mechanic shop and we lifted the car and checked all the shields and they are pretty solid. it is coming from the inside the passenger side cat.
dealer is refusing to honor the warranty and they are telling me since there is no code to show that the part faulty and your car used to be up north with salty roads we cannot replace it as part of warranty and they want to charge $3500 to replace the full exhaust system.
anyways , I live in Dallas , TX. I am looking for affordable catalytic converters to purchase and have my mechanic install them. I honestly don't get what the difference is between muffler delete, straight pipe , or high-flow cat that everyone keep suggesting. I am trying to stay stock and pass my regular state emission test as always. not looking to get laud or go to track .. any suggestion or help will be appreciated.

If you don't want test pipes Berk high flow cats are affordable. If you want test pipes they offer them as well. Test pipes are a straight pipe and will smell which i don't mind. Test pipes are more free flow than hfcs

what about state emission test , check engine light, etc ... I am really not looking for performance boost or anything . just trying to see if I have an option to avoid paying dealer and stay relativity as stock as possible

ODBII cars are not required to submit to exhaust sniffing. You can get away with a test pipe. That said, you will be a gross emitter with the test pipes. Plus, everyone behind you will hate your car because of the unburned gasoline stench.
I would press the issue with Infiniti if the car has less that 80k miles. Federal law requires they warranty such an issue. Road salt does not damage the convertor matrix, only the outer shell. The matrix has cracked.
Catalytic convertors use platinum and paladium, two rare earth metals that are quite expensive. No functional replacement cat will be inexpensive except used.

I am not sure what I can do with Infiniti, they clearly told me that since it is functioning properly and there is no code or check engine light, they cannot replace it as part of 80K / 8 Yr warranty. I don't know how I can argue that, even though what you are saying is 100% correct. The matrix has cracked inside the cat and I don't even see any rust on the outer shell
FYI , my car is 2011 and it has 42K miles

Thanks! that looks promising. I see they have "ECO III Direct Fit Catalytic Converter " for $600 both side. any idea on how reliable these ECO III cat Converters are ?

My driver side cat is rattling around as well. The oem cats will cost you a small fortune... I'm going with the Kinetix high flow cats because I too live in an emissions restricted area and they're advertised as 48 state legal, won't throw CEL, little to no rasp added to the exhaust note from what I've read (very important to me) and last but certainly not least you gain a few hp which is always a plus..

thank you .. good info .. I checked Kinetix high flow cats and looks like they go for about $400 for both side . that is much cheaper than the OEM one! great find ! don't see many reviews or youtube video for these on G37 though, but that looks like a good option

My Kinetix cats are getting delivered today actually. When I get them home I'll take pics and post them on this thread for you if you want. I'll be getting them installed Monday most likely and then I'll probably start a review thread of my own on them! These have been a long time coming for me so I'm pretty eager to see how they work out

Hey man sorry for being slow getting back to you on the Kinetix high flow cats, had a 24hr work weekend.... But I got them in and installed. Didn't get any pics of them in the box but they came very well packaged from CZP! Here are a couple pics of both sides (driver and passenger) Quality looks very good! Only thing some people may not like is that they don't have the support brackets like some of the more expensive options. Other than that I have zero complaints! Exhaust note sounds AMAZING now (my opinion). I'll be posting a full review with with sound clips on my own thread!
