You want to open her up with no load in the engine? Why in God's name would you want to do that? And who have you got lined under to rebuild your engine?

Wait what? You're saying revving to 7k in park is worse than in drive? Never heard that before.. It doesnt make sense to me that having load on the engine, or anything ever for that matter haha, induces less stress than no load. That directly goes against the past 5 years of engineering coursework Ive learned haha. Though, in retrospect, I guess that would be the only reason why this, and other cars I've driven have that feature.

Revving a engine under no load to redline (or exceeding the rev limiter) increases the risk of over revving the engine. This is practically the same thing as when someone accidentally shifts to a much lower gear than expected. The risks include floated valves, spun bearings, oil starvation, overheating, etc. as well as the additional stresses on the drivetrain. Repeated and/or sustained over revving is a engine killer, period. Even though our engines are pretty damn tough the risks are still there.

To answer your question, on a stock ECU I do not think the rev limiter can be changed. I did not see anything in the FSM or on CONSULT that indicate changing the rev limiter value.

I took a wild guess at your age and wouldn't you know it, after clicking your profile found out I guessed it right.

There is no point and no positive to revving to redline in park or neutral other than to look like a dumb ricer.

And you're the one of those lames that refer to everything as ricey and obnoxious, huh? Listen pal, I'm not saying that I'm gonna be at every red light revving my engine like a moron, but what if your friends who are also car enthusiasts want to hear the new exhaust you just put in? Or you want to make a nice sound clip? Don't act like you've never revved your engine, and that you wouldn't have gone above 5k had you had the ability to.

You do know you can rev in gear right?

I had someone stop by to look at my Grand Prix last weekend and after seeing my custom intake asked how loud the supercharger was. The Pontiac has the park/neutral rev limiter too, so I put it in gear, held the brake and hit the throttle and brake boosted it. Voila, I went above the park/neutral rev limiter.

So again, there is no need to defeat the park/neutral rev limit.

Well, thank you for the info, and thank you for proving my point

But I'm pretty sure that's the worst method to rev the car. Quite frankly, I don't even understand how it's possible; to have the engine spinning, in connection with the transmission, yet the wheels aren't spinning.

You might want to consider going into another field besides engineering then.

Smh lol.. Though ironically I am for other reasons, you should reconsider your statement. I think you're confusing undergrad engineering with tech/mechanic school. Please forgive me if I'm not yet a car expert . However, let me know if you'd like a lesson on the physics behind it all

Nice. I played that game, too, but was off by 6 years.

This is what the torque converter (TQ) does if you have a automatic transmission (AT). The TQ enables the separation of engine rotational speed to the AT's input shaft. I won't go into it all here but this is why a AT car can come to a full stop, while still in gear, and not stall the engine.

In the end HotSawce it is your car. Do as you will and enjoy it.
