Tint Questions

So I'm thinking about tinting the G and had a couple of questions:
  • will the rear defrost still work on the back window if it is tinted? What if the tint needs to be removed...will removing the tint ruin the defrost strips that's on the window?
  • the tint is mainly for looks so I want to still be able to see out of the windows without any problems. Therefore, how dark would you guys recommend me going without having issues seeing outside (I'm mainly concerned about nighttime driving)? Also, I'm thinking the same tint all around would look better than different percentage tints, right?
  • finally, for those already with their windows tinted, have you had any issues with the tints on the doors due to the windows going up and down when the door is opened/closed? How did you get around the issue to prevent your tint from peeling?
Thank you in advance guys!

1. Your defroster will work no problem. My G is tinted and I have had no issues defrosting my car. The tint will not ruin the defroster strips. Just make sure that whoever removes the tint does not "scrape" the strips.

2. Anything above 20%. Personally I have done 20% on the back three windows and 35% on the front two windows. It is hard to see your side mirrors at night with 5-20% tints, plus illegal in most states

3. There are no issues. Do not use your windows for 3 days after installation.

I have 16% on my Windows and I was driving around last night with my Windows down cause I was worried about all the little kiddies.

So anything below %20 will impair your driving.

I have 35% all around on my car and nighttime driving is no issue for the most part, the only hard part is reversing. Sometimes I need to roll down my window to get a good view.

A good tint shop should be able to get the tint perfectly aligned and most will redo the installation for free if there are any issues (peeling, bubbling, etc.) and like mentioned, DO NOT roll down the windows for the first few days. There should be no obstruction or interference with using your windows with tints.

Stick with 35% ... there isn't a state were 20% on your front drivers and passengers windows that is legal. Don't forget it's a total number, so you stock tinting (maybe 95-97%) plus the film total. Not that any officer could tell the difference between 25% and 22% but if they use a gauge. Expensive investment only to have to have it taken off (and car inspected).

Now the "legal smegal" people will probably flame me but think about if you do hit someone at night because you didn't see them and you had an illegal level ..... I know I would sue your a$$ off.

Being sued because you didn’t see someone at night may be the least of your problems. If you kill that someone you could spend around 15 years in prison for manslaughter.

OK, I'll change it to "slightly wing" someone

sLADe, FWIW I have either 15% or 20% on my Stealth. I can't remember now, since its been like 12 years since I had it done. My Grand Prix has either 15% or 20% as well. I don't know on it, because it was already done when I bought it.

The only issue I have is when I am backing into my driveway at night. I just put my windows down to back in. IMO 35% isn't dark enough, and I wouldn't go any lighter than 25%, but would probably still stay with 20% on any future vehicles.

I was waiting for the "I have 20% and see fine" .... I call foul. There is NO way a 20% tint doesn't impact your night driving.

It doesn't because other people have their lights on. If my driveway was well lit I wouldn't need to put my windows down to back into it.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I don't plan on going super dark because I don't want issues with not being able to see at night but not so light that it wouldn't make difference whether I have it on or not. I guess something subtle but noticeable since I get a lot of comments that I really need a tint to finish off the look of the G. lol

Aside from looks, wouldn't the tint also somewhat help with the protection of the interior as well since it helps block the sun a bit too?

stealthee, do you have a side shot of the stealth by any chance? I just looked over on AF and your windows are rolled down so I don't see the full setup you have.

I'll have to see if I can find any side pics and post them tomorrow.

EDIT: I found one I took right before I tore it apart to start the revival process. Hopefully it shows.

OK, that changes everything. Maybe the guy who’s hit will only end up as a paraplegic.

Typically the biggest issue is seeing around a corner at night when you make a turn, and there are no other cars around (happens from time to time). You cannot see if someone was crossing the street, happens to me every time I pull into my community and make the turn from our main road to my street and I have 35%. I have the 35% on my G and M, on my Xterra I have 20% on just the front side windows as the rest is factory tint. The 20% was used to match the factory, it's a tad darker than factory but with sunlight coming in through the windshield everything looks like it matches. My Xterra is not a DD and not even driven at night much. If it were a DD I would have never gotten the 20%. At the end of the day, it's your call and your car.

I bought my car with I think 35% all around and its like its hardly there. Looks ok at night but in the day time you can see straight through. I think the magic number is between 20-30%, everyone will have different preferences because of eye sight and style. Do what makes ya happy man, don't stress about being sued unless you tint your windshield, that just screams you're up to no good lol.
