Because the 7AT has more gear ratios to choose from, it has an easier time keeping the engine in the powerband which will again lead to greater performance and better usage of the engines peak performance. Though as you pointed out, some of this advantage is offset by having to shift more often, but the 7 gear setup is still better. In general more gears is better but beyond a certain number of gears you start to really have diminishing returns. This is why I'm a bit surprised to see some automakers working on 10 speed transmissions.

It also depends how fast the computer shifts those gears. I don't know if they updated the computer for the 7at to shift faster than the 5at but if they did I guess it might be faster.

At the end of the day I don't see the 7at coupes publishing numbers that are better than those out for the 08 5at coupe.

Might just be the same performance with just improved fuel efficiency.

This is a dead old thread ...but since its back from the dead...

Two idiots in a tunnel doesn't prove jack. Too many variables that can cause one to lay off the pedal or one not too...street racing videos on youtube are in such an uncontrolled environment that they prove nothing on which is faster.

^^^ My thoughts exactly… no real determination of speed, driver skill, lifting off the pedal, weight in the car, etc… Even if both are at WOT the idea of who is faster to 150mph vs. who can maintain that speed better, is rather ridiculous. For any real answer you need two cars otherwise identical (transmission not withstanding) and with drivers of similar skill in a controlled environment. Even then I suspect whatever the result to be minuscule, especially within the context of the majority of most of our everyday driving. So while the video "might" be worth a million words, none of them are particularly relevant to the original discussion.

I can only assume this has been beaten to death by now.. But since its been brought back, I posted a 1/4 mile race at the track of my 5AT vs another 7AT and I pulled off the line pretty hard and he never caught back up. They are so close from almost any speed I don't see the point in debating it. I do wish I had the 2 extra gears for MPG purposes but otherwise, couldn't care less.

From a longevity or reliability perspective, our experience is that auto vs stick won't matter
Bought an automatic I-35 new and gave to our son. He has over 90,000 miles without any issues. We both maintain it impeccably.

Got a G-37 6MT with almost 20,000, and it runs flawless.

Before those, put over 400,000 miles on a Maxima and over 200,000 on another Maxima, and any issues. Again, we did all maintenance

This is reliability!

Another member who just bought a BMW M3 actually had the gall to state that the reliability of our cars was not good as a BMW! Especially on an infiniti forum...I actually gave up when some BMW closet fan boy infiniti owners backed him up....

Read his final quote...
