Cool Edmunds First Drive - 2011 G25/Skyline 250GT

Edmunds First Drive - 2011 G25/Skyline 250GT

2010 Nissan Skyline 250GT First Drive

First Impression - Even with just 2.5 liters of displacement, this VQ-Series V6 still means business.

eehh. I think this is just a result of the economies and a step towards the upcoming fuel regulations. I just hope they dont make a coupe version.

2.5L has always been available in Japan, now they are expanding that line into Taiwan, China etc.

Finally something to take the place of the G20. That was a good car. Now if we could only convince Infiniti to bring back the Q sedan instead of the new M45 that looks way too much like the G on the exterior...

My guess is that both the G25 sedan & coupe (if they start making it) will outsell the G37 sedan & coupe. I just think there are a lot more people out there that would trade some of that 330 HP for better fuel economy. Plus the car itself would most likely be at a lower price point, all else equal.

Seriously, I think there are a lot of people that would be perfectly content with 200+ HP instead of 300+ HP. This is a good move by Nissan/Infiniti as far as sales are concerned.

Jusat look at BMW. You see a lot more 328i sedans, coupes, and convertibles than you see 335i.

it's more about the pricepoint than gas mileage

It'll be a great competitor for the IS250. I think it'll be a big time hit for Infiniti, but it will make the G37 suffer in terms of resale and respectability.

A V6 is cheaper. This is not about making a fast car or a car that can be easily modded. It's about taking the G name and making it more affordable. The easiest way to do that is to drop in a smaller V6.

Exactly; this is not about making a fast car or a car that can be appeals to the enthusiast. It's about taking the G name and making it more affordable to people who want to drive a G but dont' car about performance. The easiest way to do that is to drop in a smaller V6. Look at how successful the 3 Series and the C class are; sure enthusiasts know the difference between a 328i and 335i or a C300 and a C350 but most people don't. All the car about is that they're driving a BMW or Mercedes. It doesn't harm the brand or the repuation of the car by making it more accessible.

Yeah, that's probably true now...with gas prices in the $2.75 range. But if you're in the business, then you should know that if (or should I say when?) gas prices go back up to $4/gallon then the fuel economy of a vehicle will be a major consideration for a lot of people.

Either way, I think this is a good move and will help the brand sell more vehicles.

I see a few things on the horizon I'm uncomfortable with.

1) It will be much more difficult to get a deal on a G37 sedan because if you go to low, he/she will just offer you a G25. I guess that's not a big deal.

2) Is Infiniti really going to make the G25 a bargain. The current G37 has a base price of 33k. Obviously with options your paying more along the lines of 38k+. When they remodel, I would expect the price on a base to jump to 35k while the G25 will probably be 33k. With Infiniti's packages your looking at 38k for a decent G25. Certainly better than a G37, but still up there in price.

3) The G25 clears the way for a 47k G37 sedan when they remodel the G. I don't even want to think about the coupe. Certainly we are talking over 50k.

1) If I were in the market for a G37 sedan and I was negotiating price with a salesman, I'd simply tell him that the G25 is not an option because I want 300+HP. Then we can continue negotiating without the G25 in the picture. No problem.

2) Prices will increase whether or not the G25 is introduced or not. The history of the G has proven that so far.... but at the end of the day, the G25 will be at a significantly lower price point that the G37 because it has to be in order to sell. It will give buyers another option if they value a lower price and better fuel economy over the extra HP of the G37.

3) I think it's going to be a few years we see a $50K G coupe. I'm pretty sure that every option on the 2010 model will still put it a few grand under $50K. But again, prices will continue to increase regardless of the introduction of a G25 sedan. And at this point we don't even know for sure if there will be a G25 coupe. I could see it happening though....
