OBX Resonated Test Pipes

***Keep in mind, Test pipes emit stronger raw fuel smell when idle, also like High Flow Cats, these will not pass visual or tailpipe smog checks.

These were packaged as well as any car part I've ever received. They came buried in custom fitting expansion foam that would be very hard to damage, even if you tried, lol.

The pipe welds are solid and the flanges are thick, the overall pipes seem to weigh about as much as the OEM cats so they haven't skimped on the wall thickness. The ID on the pipes is 2 3/8th inch. The resonators weld to weld are 7" long, this is right between the Fast Intentions RTPs which are 6" for coupe, and 8" for sedan. The OBX doesn't have a separate sedan/coupe application.

The fitment was perfect, no adjustment needed at the OEM Y pipe. These also have the same elongated J style O2 port as the Fast Intentions which seems to be the way to go for avoiding CELs (knock on wood). The included gaskets are cheap, so if you do use them go w/ a coat of high temp RTV silicone on both sides of the gasket. These pipes also have an extra O2 port (for exhaust temp sender), You can use a oil drain plug for an 80s Toyota to cap them(I think it was a 80s Celica M18x1.5 plug), these are only a couple bucks and fit perfectly.

Have about 800 miles on these now (in the middle of a 1600 mile road trip) and sound very good and no CEL has been thrown. I've been doing a fair amount of WOT runs so hopefully "no CEL" will continue. I will post again if they do end up throwing a code.

I didn't notice any rasp or any increase in drone from my current TopSpeed Y-back Exhaust after these Test Pipes were installed.

I have since installed a new Y-pipe that has a 3" collector that mates up to my TopSpeed 2.5" collector, this has been a known cause of added rasp and that was the case w/ this, it's a very small window around 2800 to 3k rpm and is pretty mild in tone. So far I think it's something that I can live with. If the tone gets louder or wider in rpm range then I may have a shop make a smooth transition in that collector area. This had nothing to do with the test pipes AFAIK.

Unless something happens to the longevity or sound I highly recommend this part. The price has gone up quite a bit since I bought this so I guess I timed it right
Here's the link for the RTPs and the Ypipe, both vendors did a great job w/ quick shipping and packaging
This WAS $113 when I got them

I made an offer of $110 for this and was accepted

***UPDATE~
Just got back from a 1800 mile road trip, so 2k miles on the OBX RTPs and NO CEL has been thrown, so it seems that this design w/ the elongated J port mounted to the side right in front of the resonator (which is almost identical, at least visually to the Fast Intentions RTPs) is the way to go for tricking the O2 sensors

Where did you get the M18x1.5 plugs?

Got them at O-Reillys Auto Parts, it's a Dorman #MTM 65220
Dorman AutoGrade 65220 - Oil Drain Plug | O'Reilly Auto Parts
I think I just had them look up the part for a 80s Totoya Celica IIRC.

I purchased these as well. Cannot wait to install! How do you think these will sound with the stock exhaust? I will visit a drag strip after I have broken them in a little. Perhaps I can see if these pipes did anything performance wise. The conditions should be more or less the same compared to the last time I went

blnewt 04-24-2016 12:54 PM

Should add some deeper tone and you will notice some nice increase throughout the rpm range. My new Y pipe is causing some rasp that wasn't there w/ my OEM Ypipe, so you should be happy w/ that setup. Look forward to your review, keep us posted.

I got them a few days ago. Haven't had the time to install yet but I did get a quote for $240. Once the mechanic lifted the car, he changed his mind and said $300. He says the bolts are rusted to hell and will be hard to remove. I will go elsewhere sometime this week. Here they are:

Finally got these installed today. This is the only mod done to this car. The reason for them was primarily to get rid of the rattle that the OEM cats were causing. I thought it was the heat shield but it wasn't. Anyway, the CEL hasn't come on and I've driven 100 miles so far. The sound is very close to the sound of a stock G37 coupe. The only thing I would have to say I don't like is the hiss, but that comes with having test pipes. I had a G35 sedan prior to this with test pipes and full exhaust so I am all too familiar with the sound and smell. I don't feel a huge difference in acceleration, although time will tell. The only way I'll know for sure is when I take it to Island Dragway in a couple of weeks. On to the pics! Vid to come soon

Here's the video. Keep in mind, the pipes have been on the car for about 4 hours. I will make a new one once I notice a change in sound

Thanks for the update, looks like a nice install, and the sound is good. Mine only have that hiss when cold, doesn't take long to get to temp and then the sound is gone. Glad no CEL, keep us posted on that, no CEL on mine either, about 2800 miles thus far.

What gaskets did you use?

I used the ones that came with the test pipes. The gaskets are garbage but I asked the mechanic to put a lot of silicone on both ends of the pipes.

Thanks! I actually had that bolt on the extra O2 port come loose and cause a rattle. It turns out the thread was a little different so I got another one. I drive a ton everyday. So far 350 miles and no CEL! I haven't done any WOT runs yet but I will this weekend.

That's what I was getting at  Keep an eye on them. They'll more than likely fail over time.

jfisher 05-05-2016 09:09 AM

Brad, how did you apply the RTV when using the Z1 gaskets?
