Infiniti G37 - rattle at idle

2011 Infiniti G37x - rattle when engine warm and in gear (drive or reverse) goes away when RPM increases above 700 RPM. Will also exhibit in park/neutral if RPM falls closer to 500. Don't hear anything while driving, doesn't appear to be mechanical. Might be heat shield - still diagnosing. I've done idle re-learn as it's not present when idle is above 650 but probably not the best way to correct (or cover) the noise :-)

Need to turn up volume and possibly use headphones - noise starts @ 31 seconds (phone gets notification @ 1:38 so don't be surprised if loud).

We have a winner! You are the 1,000th G37x owner here to complain about rattling heat shields. See Vanna to pick up your gift.

Hope that's all it is! Difficult to accurately diagnose as I'm not overly interested in getting under vehicle while running and in gear (wife may have alternate view) and I'll start by lifting the front on jack stands and tapping around the shields.

If that's really what you think it is (and could hear it) I'll spend time searching the forums to find where the common areas are to address the noise.

Can't wait to meet Vanna!

Another video in engine compartment and under passenger floorboard. I was expecting to hear the noise under the vehicle but didn't.

At least one owner reported the top to the windshield washer reservoir was a source of a rattle. And, of course, look at the sway bar end links. Could also be a cat breaking up...

Ive had the windshield washer reservoir rattle as well drove me mad until I finally found out thats what it was, your video Eric certainly sounds like it.
It just seems the little snap on bolt for it broke down over time and lets it rattle like crazy, just replace with a brand new one and all good!

My heat shields were rattling pretty bad, tied em up and it solved my issue. I still get a rough idle sometimes, at about 600rpm my car goes rough. It sounds like the passenger cat shield might be loose, or the shields wrapping the exhaust? Give those a shot and see what happens. (I have a hole in my exhaust, so I can’t quite hear everything perfect in my car)

I'll keep digging around. Probably hard to hear the noise in the video unless the sound is way up but when I was under the hood and under the vehicle it was still in gear and the noise was still audible in the cabin (you can see the small boulder in front of the drivers side wheel). My hope was that I could hear it in the engine compartment or under the vehicle. Guess it could be something loose that's attached near the transmission tunnel.

Thanks for the help! Typically finding the noise is the most difficult part 😂.

+1 for the washer reservoir rattle, and from your video, it sounds exactly like you have it.
It Drove me nuts for months. Its a deceptive little rattle, you can only hear it in gear at idle inside the cabin near passenger side. Outside the car, underneath or in the engine bay it's really not present. It's such a simple fix though.

Awesome - I hope that's it! Failing cats concern me and I was under the car this morning with a mallet and couldn't get them to rattle.

More this weekend!

I'm starting to have the same issue. Mine sounds like it's in the engine, like a can of marbles or something. It does it when I rev it in neutral in the 800 - 1000 rpm range I think or at low speeds. Really annoying and I hope it is something as simple as a loose heat shield, reservoir, etc....

Perfect description of the noise and it was the washer reservoir. Hard to believe that small issue created such a noise.

My assumption is the noise resonates down the fender and enters the cabin behind the glove box and through the floor boards where the fender is mounted.

Many thanks for your assistance in resolving this!

It's amazing how bad (i.e. expensive) this rattle sounds and how easy it is to resolve.
