Sea Foam Spray in G37 - What's the Best Method?
 

I've been having some rough idling on warm start ups (occasionally stalls) so to try and narrow down the issue, I'm going to begin by using some Sea Foam spray. Where our G's have two throttle bodies, what would be the best way to go about doing this?

Sea Foam Suggest:

- Getting car up to operating temp and spraying the full can into the throttle body before the butterfly valve. Then turning the car off for 15 mins then a spirited drive for 5+ miles.

For our cars, which of the following two options would be better:

1. Applying half the can to one side, shutting the car off then driving for 5+ miles. Then repeat for the other side.
2. Applying half the can to one side, then apply the other half to the other side while the car is still running, shutting off, then driving 5+ miles.

I'm probably over thinking this, but I just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing anything that could potentially harm the engine.

little off topic but have you tried cleaning your throttle bodies ? Mine were disgusting and sea foam wouldn’t have gotten it off

Not yet. I wanted to see if the Sea Foam would fix the problem before I invested time into taking things apart.

I would definitely do both. Could even run a can of sea foam in the gas tank too. My TBs for reference. They get super dirty

Gotcha - will probably do that then. I haven't cleaned throttle bodies before; I presume all lines should be left connected to it when its unscrewed and cleaned? Also, i'm guessing the butterfly valve shouldn't be moved due to potentially causing issues with the electric motors - would I be right in saying that?

Yes, after removing the 4 bolts you leave everything connected as you clean it. i was extremely paranoid about getting a CEL but I couldn’t see the sanity in taking it all apart to not clean the butterfly. I thankfully had no issues once everything was reassembled.

How many miles does your car have ? If I was stalling I would probably also consider doing the spark plugs if they haven’t been changed. Very easy to do if you’re cleaning the TB

Done just over 80K miles. There's a couple of good deals on Rockauto currently for spark plugs - will probably grab some. Thanks for the advice!

I run it through the gas tank and have done it through the brake booster hose as well. Best to change spark plugs after if you do it that way. You can also use it in your oil but then again after that you'll need to do an oil change after a couple hundred miles.
