Total Transmission Faiulure - 7AT
Yesterday I noticed a few clunky shifts. Today a whizzing noise started and few miles later....
Car. No. Go.
Transmission will occasionally go into reverse. Drop it in drive and it goes nowhere.
Any ideas?

It has 61k miles on it.
Not sure what a tranny service might entail- but since I've owned the car the software update is the only transmission-related work. That was years ago.

Not that early in the vehicles' life. the 40-60k mile 3x drain and refill is recommended by enthusiasts (including myself) to prolong the life of the transmission. There's no such thing as a 'lifetime' fluid so the 40k-60k interval is a precautionary service vs. the alternative; but failure to do so wouldn't cause a failure at 60k miles. Maybe 90-120k if you drove the car hard but a 60k mile failure isn't a result of not servicing the fluid.

It is safe to say that the OP's transmission has some type of catastrophic failure. Now, whether it be electronic or mechanical that is hard to say and impossible to diagnose here. Unless there is zero fluid in the transmission (having leaked out) the car still should at least try to move. Being that OP stated the car will "occasionally go in reverse" tells me that the problem is likely electronic.
As RMB5190 stated, this problem is not due to a lack of changing the fluid.

Wish I had a lift.
Dealer is telling me the tranny is shot. However that is based solely on the tech trying to pull it into the bay- which did not happen because... well, duh.
He said the fluid was dark - which would be expected after 62k miles- and they want two hours labor to pull the pan and diagnose. Or just replace it with a reman for $7k.
I was tempted to gamble the labor to explore. But if there is no jewelry inside... then what? Gamble on replacing the torque converter?
The manual mentions the speed sensor for faults including noise and no-go in D.

I would at least full it with some fluid and see what it does. There is a maintenance hole on the passenger side near the two cooling lines. Takes a 10mm socket to open it. Probably can fill from that port with a funnel and extension attached to it. I saw the port when I took my trans out the other day.
