That's not all dirt. That's mostly the oil from the filter. There's a reason they don't use a stronger cleaner...

So when we do clean our k&n filters..should we just use dish soap to get all the oil out and then repray the oil on?

No, just use the cleaner. Really all the cleaner is is basically watered down (and dyed) Simple Green.

Thanks, but still spray oil on it or leave it? My thinking is that the old/used oil on the filter must be pretty dank as well.

The oil doesn't really get dank. The cotton is what is holding the dirt. The oil is just there as a "filter" for the filter. When you clean the filter you are cleaning the dirt off the cotton. Once the cotton is dry you then need to re-oil, without over-oiling, the filter.

Ring

The oil is around the sink. The water is still dirty.
gets more dirt out. Dirt that could restrict air flow.

the filter is re oiled so why does it matter

Oiled filters such as K&N have been shown to trap less dirt than paper filters. K&N sez otherwise but real-world tests prove them wrong. The raison d'etre for K&N is more air flow compared to paper. If you're good with that, enjoy them.

on the Rennlist forums, a guy flow benched a K&N filter vs a stock Porsche 928 paper filter. the paper filter flowed more air. LOL

not a fan of K&N at all - i put in R2C Black Hex drop in filters in my G - no oil, just blow them clean with an air compressor, or clean with water if they are really dirty.
