Limp Mode, Code P0021. Dealership wants $2650

Hey guys,

3 days ago My 2008 G37 Sport went into Limp mode in which it doesn't revolve above 2500 rpm. Engine light came on and I got two codes
P0021 and P0524

I took it to Nissan dealership since it was 5 mins away from my house and my car is no longer under Warranty even though its mileage is only 45000 miles

they just called me saying they need to replace "SPROCKET-CAMSHAFT,INTAKE" for around $2650 !!! and said I have some oils leaking. I was absolutely shocked because I don't do track or anything, take care of my car and change oil regularly and this happened out of nowhere.

what should I do?!! I'd love some input

Possible a sprocket... or rear timing cover... or possible longblock. . .

^anything I could get the dealership to try before I have to pay $2650 ?
take it to Infiniti dealership? try resetting the ECU?
not sure how this part could go broke just out of nowhere

Found this by looking up your first code

P0021 Nissan - Intake Valve Timing Control Performance Bank 2

Tech notes:

Since the Intake valve timing control solenoid valve uses oil flow to control timing, dirty oil can cause the valve to stuck open or close. Before replacing the valve, change engine oil and filter and reset engine code.

P0524 Nissan - Engine Oil Pressure Too Low

Possible causes
- Engine oil pressure or level too low
- Faulty Crankshaft position sensor (POS)
- Faulty Camshaft position sensor (PHASE)
- Fualty Intake valve control solenoid valve
- Accumulation of debris to the signal pick-up portion of the camshaft
- Timing chain installation
- Foreign matter caught in the oil groove for intake valve timing control

What i would suggest that you do is check you engine oil levels, then change your oil and filter. Afterwards reset the code and see if it persists
Otherwise bro I have no clue what else it could be lol

Good research Byron^^^+1:biggthumpup:

At the other forums Cause for the dreaded P0011/P0021 codes that everyone is curious about - G35Driver this person says its a gasket that causes the issue. Replacing with a metal gasket fixes the problem.

James37 02-17-2014 09:26 PM

Byron Sexton and muyrec, thank you guys SO MUCH that was so helpful, I'll ask their mechanic tomorrow to start with an oil change and see how it goes, then try changing the metal gasket

sounds scary... good luck with the fix and please update us

Sounds like both of these things could also be caused by not changing the oil at proper intervals as well. Stayed current with maintenance?

Synolimit 02-18-2014 08:22 AM

Yeah I'm afraid to ask what oil you're using and how long you let it stay in there!

I change oil every 3000 miles at the infinti dealership, keep in mind though that in the past 3 years I've only put 15000 miles on it. Dealership never commented on my oil. And the limp mode happened about 900 miles after the last oil change

James37 02-18-2014 09:38 AM

And it's always been maintained at the dealership, I never messed with anything

Did they write down the part number that needs to be changed? I tried to look up the part on orderinfinit's website and the closest part I found by name was camshaft & timing / intake gear which cost 152$. Maybe you could order the part and have a local mechanic change it out for you instead.
