09 G37 Won't shift from D to DS

This happened on three occasions before dealer could diagnose and repair. Intermittent failure of shift mechanism to engage manual mode. The first time it was also associated with an issue that caused the engine to lose power. They apparently fixed the engine/electronics problem but sure enough two months later the shift problem resurfaced. They kept car for two days and said they could not reporduce the issue. I drove for three more months before the problem resurfaced so I drove directly to the dealer without turning off the engine. They finally diagnosed DTC P1815 which is failure of the manual mode switch. Since the swith is intergrated with the shift assembly, they had to completely replace the shifter assembly but I think they finally got it right. Soooooooo glad it was still under warranty or it probably would have costed a load. If you have this problem, you might tell your dealer to check that switch.

Nice. Sounds like you lucked out being able to go straight to the dealer at the tight moment. Was the CEL actually showing on the dash?

E-Man Apr 24, 2010 02:09 PM

There was no clue on the dash. The only way I knew was when I shifted to manual to downshift approaching a stop as I frequently do, the indicator was still showing "D" and of course the transmission was not responding as expected.

I have the same problem now, the dealer told me it's just a switch/AT sensor replacement issue and is no biggie. I'm going to have mine replaced next time I go a service, thanks for the update.

This is a common issue actually. I had it back in summer 09 for a while and never really was bothered to fix it and then went away after a few weeks. Been working fine for the past year or so.

Same thing happened to me, and they replaced my shifter assembly as well.

Ahujadaddy Apr 29, 2010 03:13 PM

wow... this just happened to me as well. Search really is your friend =p

problem goes away after restarting the car but has been coming back more often now. hope the dealership doesn't give me BS about any mods like grounding wires... knowing my luck

Hey Guys, did a search & I think I have the same issue with my 5AT
While I can start the car & Ds will work for a short amount of time, while in DS it will switch back to D mode on it's own & I can no longer shift with the stick

Sam, how did you go with getting the sensor replaced? did you have to get the whole assembly replaced or just the switch/sensor?
any info is appreciated guys

it's the shifter.
go into the dealer(left the car running when I had the prob)
show them it won't go into ds.
btw mine would only act up when the car was warmed up.
they checked once before and the car was ice cold, tech came back with can not duplicate.
next time I show up,car running and that same tech he felt like a moron.
he aplogized, and promptly replaced the shifter.
that was like a year or so ago. No problem since.

I'm surprised it took that long to diagnose. If you have enable a manual switch (i.e. move shift lever to DS) and nothing happens, the first place to look is.... the switch.

AussieV36 Jun 6, 2010 04:16 AM

thanks guys,
unfortunately they don't sell this car via the dealer network in Australia, I have a grey imported jdm model, so I have to specially order stuff in from them (always a p.i.t.a unless I have part numbers or hopefully they use the same parts from the 350/370z auto trans.

at least I know what the issue is now

I'm having this problem. I installed paddles to my g37x by myself. Will my dealer give me a hassle regarding my warranty? I'd like to think not.

I bet your dealership doesn't even realize that your paddle shifters were not factory installed, much less give you any hassle about them.

Thanks.. you were right, they had no idea.
