Sedan's 6MT = Coupe's 6MT?
 

I'm looking at getting a G sedan. I need something a bit more comfortable than my Sti. I will be test driving the G sedan this weekend, but the dealer only has auto sedans. They do have a few 6mt coupes. How does the coupe 6mt compare to the sedan 6mt? Will they feel about the same? I'd rather not order a 6mt sedan without test driving it.

Also, I've been reading the G's 6mt clutch is a bit tricky. Is this true?

The 6MT is the same in the sedans as the coupe. If you drive a coupe's 6MT you'll know what a sedan's 6MT feels like.

Keep in mind that the seating position is different. You sit higher up in the sedan, and the position is closer to that of the STi. This may or may not affect your opinion of the clutch engagement.

I own an '05 STi, and my wife & I just purchased an '09 G 7AT Sport. A friend also just purchased the new 6MT Coupe.

So, I can potentially give you some objective input.

I think the G's manual transmission is much-maligned by most of the car rags. But in reality, is better than I expected. However, it's a FAR cry from that of the STi. The clutch for the G is just too light, feeling more like that of my old Prelude. The throw of the shifter isn't all that bad, but it still feels numb, when compared with the more mechanical feel of the Subaru. Also, it's easy to take it for granted, but the reverse lockout ring on the STi is fabulous, when compared with the push-down method of the G. At least, "R" is where it should be, unlike certain German cars...

You may have your heart set on a manual car, and I can totally understand. I'm not getting rid of the STi anytime soon. But, the auto G sedan we bought is ridiculously fun (and FAST) to drive. The paddle shifters are a genuine asset, not just a gimmick. I find myself leaving it in the full manual mode much of the time, and being that you can keep both hands on the wheel while just flicking the gears up and down with your fingers, you gain a sense of confidence which will surprise you.

They weigh nearly the same, steering ratio is the same and suspension is the same. It might feel a bit different with 19" wheels though. Brakes are the same too.

It's all of these things that got me hooked on getting a G. It always annoyed me that I could have the all the coupe goodies on my "sport" sedan. Infiniti fixed that in 2009.

You do sit higher in the sedan. I wouldn't mind if the seat went about 1/2" lower.
