Well, I am not a computer programmer, but I can tell you from experience that when you turn off your car it is NOT like reseting the ECU. Sometimes things get hung up and it's the only way. I know of many times where a MAF sensor was kicking the ECU into safe mode and limping the car and would not be resolved till the ECU was reset.

And don't forget, when you turn the car off its like turning your computer off, which is essentially resetting it. The whole moniker of resetting the ECU is not the same as resetting a computer, its actually more like resetting a ROUTER ( by holding it down and making it reflash the rom to default values ), which is usually done when you are having a serious problem and have to resort to resetting the rom and starting from scratch.

Ok I think you needed to reread that because I wasn't stating that turning off your car was like resetting the ECU in the way that YOU understand what a RESET is. RESET, in those terms, is like turning off a computer router. It is technically being RESET, but not to its default values. That requires a HARD RESET, which is an entirely different thing. When you HARD RESET a router it rewrites the rom to its initial values. When you HARD RESET (or in your terms, reset) an ECU, it rewrites the tables/rom, etc.

Anyway it doesn't matter regardless, there is always a time to hard reset the ecu, and if you have a code that is being thrown and want to reset then by all means do it. We were talking about resetting the ecu to defaults for purposes of performance gain/new modifcations/resetting after using it for a long time to regain performance (which i don't think is correct).

Don't worry. The ECUs in our future cars will the drive the car for you =D
