Rear Gallery Gasket Repair Video - Walkthrough
Hello,
Saw this video and thought the guy did a great job of breaking down how to fix this nightmare. I haven't seen a video like this on the forum so I figured I'd share. His lingo is a bit off (you'll see what I mean...) but after watching it, I felt like I could tackle this if it ever came to it.
Mods - Feel free to do what is needed if I'm in the wrong place.

I've seen that video a while ago, it's a good reference. If you don't have to get it done in a hurry, a garage DIY is definitely possible, just getting to everything will be more timely and good lighting and taking many pics along the way so you can re-orientate the parts is a must. I already have a game plan of how I'll go about this if this SOB rears it's ugly head, wouldn't like it but I'd plow through

For a garage repair and not being 100% knowledgeable about the platform I think he did a great job. I think I heard him say it took him somewhere around four days? He also ordered a new bearing and water pump and installed those. I thought the cardboard box trick was a pretty good idea for keeping track of bolts. I guess I thought this was a bit more involved when I heard about the engine being dropped in order to perform the repairs but from the looks of it, this is what I'd say is a 7/10 difficulty. Now that I've seen it, this doesn't seem that bad if I had to do it one day.

1.breaking that crank pully loose (although I think theres a tool that you can get for about $300 that makes it much easier);
2. possibly cracking/ warping the front cover;
3. Replacing all the many seals and o rings properly..seems like theres so many of them...
I've been mentally preparing for the day that I might have to do this as my G gets up there in mileage not just because of the oil gallery gasket, but because I'm still on the original water pump at 167 000 miles and changing it requires basically the same teardown/work...and afaik is way past due...

Having a 2012 really gives me peace of mind but if the day ever came, the car would be towed to my dad's garage where all the tools needed would be available. I can see someone with a working knowledge of the platform struggling to perform this replacement if they didn't have the exact tools needed.
I was kind of amazed at how detailed the video was. There never seemed to be a gap, per se, between each step and I was waiting the whole time for a gap in the procedure where they forgot to film or something. It always seems to happen when it comes to technical videos like this. There's also more info provided in the comments below as to where he got parts and what not.
Dude killed it.

Agree, having that well documented w/ the clear shots at the affected areas makes it much easier to want to tackle this mess. You should be in the clear w/ your 2012 (lucky you!) but for those of us in that danger zone a bit haunting never knowing if & when. We take plenty of long road trips, sometimes a couple hundred miles from the nearest metro area so not a great feeling for sure
Here's a good pdf file to load and from the experience of the author it seems that removing the original rtv on the cover and replacing w/ fresh rtv seems like a really timely part of the DIY.
