DIY: Changing rear differential gear oil

im trying to figure out what is best to put in my car by reading this thread and doing other research. clearly i know very little about this topic but im trying learn and to get it ready to bring to the track occasionally for track days, plus im past due for a change anyway. based on this thread it sounds like the options are:
1) Amsoil 75W90 (possibly with friction modifier/additive if needed)
2) Redline 75W90 which works with LS without the need for friction modifier/additive
3)Mobil 1 synthetic LS 75W90
4) Motul 90 PA limited-slip differential
which raises another question: why are all of these oils 75W90 if the manual calls for 80W90? i see that the amsoil says its a replacement for 80W90 but the others do not. does this matter? (maybe im over analyzing the entire thing...)
thoughts?

Here's what I'm using for the next change. Notice it contains an LSD additive in it.
75w90 is fine for a car that specifies 80w90, it's just a slightly wider viscosity range. Very slightly better in colder conditions. Here's something that gives a basic explanation of oil viscosity.
Motor Oil Viscosity Grades Explained in Layman's Terms
Any of those you listed are fine. Personal preference, price, and availability dictate what many if us use. Pick one.

So I changed the diff oil today, in which I utilized Mobile 1 75-90 with friction additive and it basically eliminated the majority of the differential whine I had prior to. Its obviously much quieter and smoother as well. I did not have to use a pump nor did I have to jack the car up either. With that, my G has 61k on it in which the diff oil has never been changed. Hence, the oil stunk to high heaven when I started draining it out. Just an FYI! -_-

How did you perform this without a pump or jack?

It's been ~8 or 9 months since I changed to redline MT85. We've had temps as low as teens in the last few weeks here in chicago. Slightly notchy when cold, but nothing major. I'd say it is smoother in the cold than it was with the stock fluid. Once the car is fully warmed up, no issues at all.

I changed mine without a pump or jack. The fill/drain plugs are easy to access without jacking the car up. To fill just squeeze the bottles until the fluid begins to run out a voila, it's done! I used Mobil 1 75W90. The Mobil 1 bottles can be squeezed, if you are using other brands, like I see posted they would make it impossible to squeeze the fluid into the differential. http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/..._75W-90LS.aspx

^^My bad.. That's what I meant, MT85. These 12 hour days are brutal lately.. I was drawing a complete blank when trying to remember what I used. Thought it was 75w85. Isn't that what the MT85 is anyways?

Hi Guys! Great write up btw. I just did my rear diff last night i also was able to do it without jacking it up and without a pump. i used mobil 75/90w LS
Cons to not jacking up tho:
rear diffuser was up in my face a couple times and i was not able to use my torque wrench because of ground clearance. I just ended up hand tightening it. also squeezing the bottles takes a lil more time but pretty easy. its hard to get the last bit of oil from the end of the 1st bottle so i transfered the rest to the new 2nd bottle.
pros to not jacking it up. Its level you without having to jack up all four corners so draining is faster and filling is also leveled.
In the future i will still do it this way because its just so darn convenient

Thanks Black Betty can always count on you as well as the other MODs to do quality posts. I'm about to undertake this as well as manual transmission flush (thanks again BB) and while i have it in the air do my oil.... went to nissan on the way to work this morning and bought all the fluids, washers, and filters, and got all nissan genuine stuff except for the rear diff oil... they said they didn't have any and said that Penzoil would be just fine... it is also a 80W-90 GL-5 synthetic anybody hear anything about this stuff?
