Doug's ambient lighting mod

A continuation from......
https://www.myg37.com/forums/showthr...71#post2333971

This is a supplement to Doug's write-up because I am lazy and don't want to include the details :). Pics should speak for themselves.....

Materials:
18-20 gauge filament-core (soft-core?) wires (I used solid-core, it works too but just harder to deal with)
http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...ighting009.jpg

LEDs specified in Doug's DIY write-up
http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...ighting012.jpg

Potentiometer

Switch
http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...ighting010.jpg

Tools:
Screw driver
Drill
Wire stripper
Soldering iron+solder

First grab the center console that surrounds the shifter at the rear most part and pull upward towards the ceiling:

Exposed (if you want to change the knob...)

http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...ighting006.jpg

Disconnect the power
http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...ighting008.jpg

Go back in the house and make one of these
http://www.buckeyeaz.gov/images/page...ke%20decor.jpg

No, I mean one of these
http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...electrical.jpg

You might want to measure the length of the wire before you cut it, but give yourself some slack so it's easier to install.

Pics of random steps

http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...ighting017.jpg

http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...ighting018.jpg

Take the whole thing that you've just made back out to the car but BE CAREFUL that the solder joints on the LEDs are not tugging in different directions because it might tear :eekdance:

Instead of soldering to the yellow cigarette trim light wire for power, I just stripped away a section of it and wrapped my solid-core wire around it then taped it up with electrical tape. (for a less-permanent set-up)
http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...ighting035.jpg

Feed the passenger side LEDs through the center
http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...hting019-1.jpg

Feed everything else (driver side LED, potentiometer, switch) to the left side
http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...ighting021.jpg

Drill your holes for the potentiometer and switch mounting locations then secure them. Mount the LEDs and connect the grounds.

vINCe_Inc May 14, 2008 12:27 PM

those led's have built in resistors to take on the full 12 volts ?

ucla bruin May 14, 2008 12:52 PM

The LEDs are on a strip, which has resistors.

Alright, should be the same wire for the sedan, not sure though.

They probably are the same. Well, I got the service manual we can take a look at it, too.

]\[ /-\ ]\/[ May 18, 2008 07:53 PM

so these lights only come on when the car is on and u have the switch 'ON"?

or do they come on when you open the door? like the accent lights

Dieseldoug22 May 18, 2008 08:59 PM

They come on with the headlights. They are hard to see in the day, and it looks great while driving... that is why it is not hooked up to the door.

Great write up Danny.

Thanks, couldn't have done it without your help!

The switch in the circuit layout is only to switch between blue or white LEDs.
