Damn you Goo Gone, look what it did...

This was totally my bad though. I put some Goo Gone on a few areas where tree sap hardened on my car. I waited a couple minutes and wiped, but it didn't really work. So I decided to soak it, eat dinner, and come back. Bad move. After wiping, I noticed this...

I can't tell if this is me spreading the sap all over the area, or if it's actually the Goo Gone which may have eaten through my clear coat. Anyway, it looks awful. I don't think I even want to touch my car anymore until I see a professional detailer. It's about that time. Here's a pic of a part of my spoiler. What do you think?

This is what I get for not washing my car for a month and parking under a tree once in a while. FML.

Haha yeah sorry, it's a bad picture, I took it on my iPhone a couple hours ago under low lighting. Basically, the tiny speck in the middle of the picture is where the tree sap was. The huge blob surrounding it is what happened afterward. Not a pretty sight.

I did manage to stop by Auto Zone before they closed and picked up some Turtle Wax Bug, Tar, and Tree Sap Remover. It worked much better than the damn Goo Gone. It got almost all of my tree sap stains removed. Unfortunately, the blob still remains (although it looks a little better than before).

Hey BB, I'll take a better picture later, but from what you can see, is that something etched onto the clear coat, or did it eat it away?

What kind of Goo Gone did you use? I remember I used some extreme goo gone on my front bumper and it ate all the clear away. You could tell even on a white car. good thing I was repainting it anyway.

Depends on the goo gone you used.

Wow...what kind of Goo Gone you used? I used Goo Gone to remove the letters on my trunk with no damage.

Looks exactly like this:

Well, I looked this morning after applying the TW Bug, Tar, & Tree Sap remover and it's a lot less noticeable. I think it's something I can live with. Funny thing is, I left a dab of GG on my passenger side door where another tree sap stain was, and it didn't leave any residue or eat clear coat on that side. The bottle is actually pretty old now that I think about it, although I don't see how that'd make a difference.

Safe to say, I won't be using it on my car again.

I cry for your car.

You seem to be taking this in stride though. Might have ruined my day, lol.

For future reference, Isopropyl Alcohol is the correct thing to use to remove tree sap. Comes off almost instantly.

I can't be sure because that picture is horrendous, but it looks like you used the googone on your chrome spoiler?

If so, I can imagine that's where the problem lies. I think GG is relatively clear coat safe ( wouldn't leave it on a rag and go eat dinner though) but chrome is a lot easier damaged because the finish flakes off.

I would simply wrap your spoiler in vinyl or go get it painted.
