AHAH +1, I have two garbage pails turned upside down on the side of the house to cover the sprinklers.

You shouldnt break the sprinkler head, then it will just shoot straight into the air. Some things you could try...

1. Get it capped off, prob your best bet, but the apartment might not want to rise ruining the lawn. You should do it yourself or have someone do it and not tell the management.

2 If you want a quick fix, cover it with a garbage pail, traffic safety cone, or some sort of bucket/pail. Only problem is if someone moves it then your car gets sprayed on.

3. Look for something permanent to cover it, like a fake rock.

Fake rock beats any of my ideas, which would be to break it off or stuff the sprinkler system with clay / caulking.

I'd just get a cap, they are like $.98 at a hardware store, get your plyers out and swap the caps. If you want to be really sneeky, remove the sprinkler head and put something in the sprinkler head itself to block the water flow, and just put it back on. That would be the best IMO. They'd never see that the head is different and probably unless they are doing a system test, they aren't going to be around when they go off.

if you dont want to get in trouble with the manager, ask him to re adjust the head, when its properly adjusted, the pressure and everything, you should be fine. IF not, then get the rock lol
