I think you can do everything via the cable now so you would probably be ok, but it is a huge waste of time and you have to have a lot of faith that the tuner will get the tune right without actually having the car in front of them. Something that takes a minute to change on the dyno can take a week to change via a cable.

You are right about Z1- they are definitely tainting the entire experience. But I have remained quiet for way too long. Enough is enough. I don't know anyone else on here who would not be bitching about Z1 the first week they had this sort of issue. I waited many many months giving them the benefit of the doubt.

If you have a reputable tuner, and it's roughly the same price, I can't imagine why you'd want to do a remote tune.

Do you have a place where you can easily do a 2000-7500 rpm run in 3rd, which is what, 90 something?

I did stage 1 and 2 etunes in my LGT. I found the expressway at lunch offered the least traffic and best visibility for police. Still, even getting ready to begin logging on the side of the road and waiting for a gap in traffic was difficult. And since you're literally starting at like 25 mph, traffic comes up your a$$ quick!

Get the timing wrong and run up behind traffic and the logs a waste. I tried to get at least 2 clean pulls, which sometimes took multiple attempts.

It's not as fun as it sounds

Absolutely. There's a section of highway outside of town that begins at a stoplight intersection and doesn't have another on-ramp for 3 miles. Hit at late at night, and get on when the way is clear, and there's no one approaching behind you, and I could easily log runs in 3rd WOT to redline. Probably need a co-pilot, but my youngest would love to be that person.

I'm sure there are other places. You just need to scope things out.

I came away from today's shop visit feeling pretty good. They use the Mustang Dyno... not that I know one from another, other than to be aware that some people have strong feelings about the make & model dynamometer.

It's primarily a racing shop, prejudiced to Mazda because those are the owners race cars. But they also support a community of friends who are professional and amateur racers. (It's so odd to find this place 15 miles from my house.) Anyway, part of all this is a tuning business they started a couple of years ago, where they tune street-pro cars. They use EcuTek (along with a whole bunch of others, but EcuTek is what applies to the G/Z), but have never done a G before, just Z's.

The OBDC cable is theirs, so I wouldn't have to bother about that. Just buy the licence key, and schedule the dyno tune. The service is $700 and I think the license is around $250. So with tax, this is a $1000 project for a same-day dyno tune.

4DRZ, sorry for talking about this in both threads, but that's what I'm doing because the conversation is still current in both.

Stop trying to hijack my thread Rochester!

I guess if you have the time and the patience for a road tune, you could try it since it is cheaper. But if you get caught speeding at redline in 3rd gear, it could cost you a whole lot more. I hit 85 in 3rd gear at about 6,400 rpm doing my last pull. That was 20mph over the speed limit and enough to quadruple my insurance for a few years and probably $300+ for the ticket. I believe 25 over is a loss of license. Not worth it for me. However, I think it would be easier for you to hit a higher rpm at a lower speed with your rear diff gearing.

Today is the start of week 3 in trying to get my Z1 tune fixed. I sent John a data log on Saturday and left a msg. with Russ to have him call me, but of course I did not hear anything all day. I called today and left a msg. with Austin to have Jon call me a few hours ago, but still nothing.

Jon told me last week that he wants me to keep the cable another week after the last tune. However, unless he gets the final tune to me today or tomorrow there is no way he is getting his cable back in 30 days. Hopefully, I can extend that with him a bit.

Their phone doesn’t work. Lol not sure why they even have a phone? I had their hold music memorized haha
Try this,
spencer@z1motorsports.com
leave him your number or if reply over email is better do that.
When things usually went south, Spencer was the only one to fit anything.

Spencer is usually pretty good. I will try e-mailing him next. E-mails to Jon take a few phone calls just for him to read them

Sounds like a nightmare of a time, sorry you're dealing with this type of crap. Can't say I'd be happy with the service.

It definitely sucks Epiphany. I really hope no one ever does a mail-in tune with Z1. Such a pain in the azz!

I e-mailed Spencer this morning to see if I could keep the cable longer since Jon is so hard to get a response back. I e-mailed and called Jon and left him a msg. on Sat, but never heard anything back. So I tried calling Jon and left him a msg. yesterday too. Still nothing back...

If satisfying the expectations of an ethical business transaction weren't enough motivation, you'd think they would just want to get you off their backs. Either way... damn.

When do you think you reach the breaking point? Sounds to me like they forfeited the cable.

Jon's ears must have been ringing. He sent me tune #6 today and told me I can keep the cable longer. Hopefully we are nearing the end
