Jroyalty7's 2012 OB G37xS Sedan Build Thread

Alright so I decided to finally start a build thread, even as my modding is winding down, due to 1) Lack of funding 2) Running out of things to mod 3) I can now confine my thoughts and discussions in one area instead of cluttering the forums with more and more threads. I mean I practically live here so I mine as well help tidy up the place lol!

So a bit about me first:
My OB 2012 G37xS Sedan is the fourth car I've owned. I started with a '94 Nissan Maxima->'99 Audi A6->'06 Subaru Legacy->My current DD the G! I love the G! I have always done minor mods to my cars, mainly aesthetics, but always air intakes. This is the first car I have truly went to town modding and I am loving every minute of it.

A bit about my car:
I was out searching for exactly the car I have, fully loaded 2010-2013 G37x with the sport package all black, black interior w/ brushed aluminum trim or an Audi A4 s line package. I had already been researching these cars for almost a year before making my move so I knew the differences between them well. Found a local dealership in Buffalo that had them both and spent half the day test driving each. The G was just a more powerful more fun to drive car, plus I trusted the reliability factor, my mind was made up that day. My local dealership wasn't giving me any kind of deals I was happy with so I hopped back online and fortunately found another G with all the specs I wanted in Rochester, with less mileage and a better price . I was driving my 2012 G37 xS home with only 23,000 miles on it the very next night , that was 3/4/14!

How I got to this point:
So I discovered Myg37.com probably around September 2014 after I started looking into LED's and fog light mods. I lurked around for a while until finally joining as a member in January 2015. Ever since then I have been on a roller coaster of modding and have learned so much mechanically and technically it's hard to describe. I never thought I would be installing manifolds, springs, and exhausts myself (with a little help from my brother-in-law lol) But here I am with thoughts of turbo builds dancing through my head lol
Anyways Ill try and timeline as best I can with the pics and then keep going with my build wherever it takes me!! I am always welcome to suggestions!

March 2014:
First wash

Got the tints done sometime in Fall 2014, went 35% all the way around, cops give you too much trouble around here if you go real dark. No pic from that but here's one I like anyways, still completely stock w/ the ugly duck feet :

First Real Mod (The start of trouble ) December 2014 JDMtoy LED fog lights w/Halos wired into the factory OEM fog light harness:

Cant really see the halo's that well in pics, but they look great in person!

Good pic of winter and LED plate light after I did the interior/exterior LED conversion:

Decmber 2014: Then this happened
Installed Stillen Gen 2 Intakes

I went with the Gen 2's originally because I was concerned with the true CAI's since I had always read about hydrolocking issues and the difficulty of install/maintenance. My opinions would change, thanks to these forums, as you'll see later

January 2015:
Winter was fun (not) but gave me lots of time to research and buy car parts, this is when I joined the site and started bugging Blnewt about wheels and tire sizes for the X :

Sometime in January 2015:
Installed the Midnight grille after stalking Ebay for a month

February 2015:
Change your sway bars they said... it'll be easy they said... lol. After much research I decided to upgrade to Hotchki's sway bars. I learned several important lessons about modding your car with this one.
1) Make sure you have all necessary tools before starting this mod (IMPACT GUN!) and prepare for the worst (Nut wont budge with impact gun)
2)If you're going to mod in the most brutal winter in the last 100 years... have a heated garage!

After many beers, cigars, and trips to Home Depot (before I drank ) I ended up conceding defeat and dragging my butt, tail between my legs, to my brother-in-laws house to help get this mod done. 3 hours later we finally got the stubborn bolt off by torching, grinding, and finally cutting it off. No collateral damage was incurred! That was just the rear! I let my mechanic do the front
Although I did try first lol

It is truly the best bang for your buck mod though, what a difference with the rear on the middle setting and front on the firmest.

March 2015:
Started with a bang, after a lot more research I decided to go with a conservative drop given my area's affinity for snow and potholes. Ordered and received my Swift springs and set out once again to my brother-in-laws house for the install after working all night lol. Everything went smooth here, borrowed (for free after return) from Pep Boys the manual spring compressor and we had everything on in a couple hours.
Pics from install, sorry no afters of the shiny red springs, not sure what I was thinking... oh yeah I wasn't, I didn't sleep at all...

Before (bottom 2 pics) and after (top 2 pics) comparison pic:

Carsmo ***** also came in, I went with the limited availability high polished ***** and glad I did:

Also tried my hand at customizing a grille emblem, could not get clean lines for the life of me so it didn't end up on my car... yet, I haven't given up on this one, I'll keep you posted.

Apparently couldn't get enough painting, G2 caliper paint came in as well this month, so my calipers became red! Planning/saving for that BBK, but this will do for now.

April 2015:
The wheels that I so carefully researched sizes and offsets for (*cough* *cough* Thanks Blnewt *cough* *cough*) finally came in after a 2 month wait!! I really loved the look of the Stance SC5ives with the matte black barrel and chrome lip. I went with 20x9 et 32 wrapped in Hankook Ventus v12 Evo's size 245/35/20

April 2015:
Tried to get my photog skills up to par, still have a long way to go if I wanna get on r1cky's or now Rochester's level lol

Still April-May 2015:

Headed to the brother-in-laws for a nice exterior detailing:

May 2015:
Finally got over the hydrolocking fears and switched to the Stillen Gen 3's. Install really wasn't that bad, used my bday to score a dremmel and that made all the difference! Right tools for the job, lol, see that lessons learned!

Nevermind the dirty engine bay! It was clean lol.

Also got my Motordyne M370 this month from Neverbonestock at a great price (thank you sir), just had to source some tubing, brass T pieces, and clamps from my local car parts store and the name plate from Motordyne:

Wasnt digging the lips on the runners too much so I dremmeled them down and sanded everything smooth:

Install was very straight forward, this was one of my favorite mods from both an installation stand point and noticeable gains on the butt dyno.

Also cleaned my TB's while I was in there, the gunk on there was only after 31,000 miles... pretty crazy!!

Still May 2015:
Made and installed my own 4 AWG grounding kit with 00 gold ring crimp terminal connectors thanks to both BlackBetty's thread and another I can't think of right now:

June 2015:
This was a big month for me and intricatedetail (Carl) both, as I bought most of his car parts lol. I was lucky enough to pick up his Fast Intentions CBE and HFC's at the end of the build cycle so I only had to wait a few weeks and the were shipped direct to my door! But before that arrived I also bought his Cusco FSTB and took it to get the brace mounts powder coated a metallic translucent candy red. Thanks again Carl, great guy!

Oh side note I did also get the AutokitsX CF diffuser after waiting literally 3 months and wasn't digging it on my car so I sold it on Ebay... ahhh memories....

Speaking of memories... I refer to this period as BFI (Before Fast Intentions) lmao:

Finally my favorite mod of all June 2015
Fast Intentions Full CBE paired with Fast Intentions HFC's powered by a beautiful VQ engine exhaust note....a match made in auditory heaven. Installed it the same day I got it... thanks again to a generous and knowledgeable brother-in-law:

The Install:
Didn't take us too long, about 5-6 hours total, beware of the demon bolt lol, Out with the old:

In with the new:

And finally AFI (after Fast Intentions) :

Man, first off....holy cow!!! That thing is so good looking. You put me to shame without even trying. Second, thanks a ton for the shout out. It was a pleasure doing business with you and I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Third, Rochester is going to love you, since it seems you are going to keep your car for a while. Fourth, "dat FI doe". Yikes...I probably won't watch those videos again...because...yikes. That sounds so good and my wife even sat there with this huge pout on her face because of how amazing that would have sounded on my car. It sounds wicked on yours though, and I'm glad it went to someone who was/is going to put it to good use! Cheers man, and I have nothing but the best of wishes for you in your future mods.

Alright so probably looking into doing some cooling mods next, anyone have any experience with Z1 oil cooler kits or the stillen transmission cooler kits? Any recommendations on which I should I go with first? I'm not planning on tracking this car except maybe to run some drags at the track here (only 1/8th mile) Maybe looking to upgrade my fuel injectors and fuel pump also, still keeping in mind I am NA and trying to work towards a turbo or s/c build. Anyone got any input/expertise on these?
