Kirk's Build Thread

I figured it was about time that I start my build thread, even though I don't have a lot done just yet.

I figured I would start with my story on why I chose Infiniti...

Back in 2012 I was looking to trade my 2011 Kia Forte in for something else. It was a good college car, but I never felt safe in it, it was just too light and any strong winds would cause you to drift into anther lane if you weren't paying attention. So I started looking around at viable options. My choices narrowed down to a Kia Optima SX, Pontiac G8 GT, and a Chevrolet Tahoe LT. I quickly dismissed the Tahoe after looking up insurance for it ($435 a month), I was nervous about having a RWD Pontiac for winters since I wouldn't have the means of storing or funds of purchasing winter wheels, and the Kia dealership wanted way too much for the Optima SX ("if you don't pay $35k for the car someone else will since it's in such high demand" -salesman). So I started looking around again on cars.com to see what other options were out there and started doing some research on Infiniti. I wanted a near luxury car with sporty performance without the premium upkeep. I saw that my local dealership had a 2009 G37xS in moonlight white and decided to stop by and take a look at it. At the time someone else had "purchased" it and I took a drive in a 2009 G37x in silver. I enjoyed driving the car a lot and was strongly considering it, but I never liked the way the non sport bumpers on the '07-'09 G sedans looked. Luckily the financing for the white G fell through and I was able to purchase my first Infiniti.

I thoroughly enjoyed driving my xS but was extremely disappointed in the fact that Infiniti "neutered" the awd sport sedans. So almost 2 years later I found a 2011 G37S sedan and decided to go and test drive it. I had ecery package available (except 6mt and anniversary edition red seats) including the technology package that has the radar guided cruise control, automatic windshield wipers, collision prevention. Later that day I came home with it.

Then the modding slowly started... It already came with Eibach lowering springs. I was happy with the drop but not so much with the wheels not being flush with the bumper. So I added 20mm Akata spacers.

I then added 5000K Osram Xenarc head light bulbs, Diode Dynamic reverse LED and license plate LED lights.

I found a great deal on a brand new OEM midnight black grille and installed it.

After reading about the R2C intakes I decided to install them I've been quite happy with them, except that I would prefer to have more lower RPM sound, like you get at 3.5K and up. Hopefully I'll start working on getting an exhaust soon so that will take care of it.

I have installed my summer rims (coupe 19's) and tires (Yokohama S.drives) and I am happy with the way the rims look, but the tires could stand to be one size wider. I was misinformed by the company that installed them that the tires would be the perfect size for the rims. When I asked them if I could just switch them out and pay a little extra to have the wider tires installed they said that once the tires are installed they are used and I would have to buy a new set. So they will stay for now.

Good start, bro. Keep up the work. The mods make the car more "yours".

Great job thus far Kirk, you should DIY the vinyl trim if you have the time, only set you back about $25.

At any rate, looking good for sure, haven't heard of Akata spacers, have they been good in your opinion?
Look forward to your Gs future!

Yeah, I could do it myself, I just rarely have the time to do so, plus my brother usually helps me with some of my mods that I don't feel comfortable doing and he just suggested to have it done professionally so its done right the first time.

I've been fairly happy with my Akata spacers. I noticed that the past two months I started having some wheel vibrations from the rear and more from the front lately which I blamed on the spacers. I kept them on when I had my new tires put on my summer rims and there was some rubbing on the rears so I took them off of the rears but still have some vibrations from the rears only, and kept the spacers on the fronts with no vibrations currently. So I think it was more of the tires loosing some rigidity in the side walls more than anything, but now I think I have a slightly bent wheel that I may need to get fixed.

I had the chrome trim blacked out in black gloss vinyl. I'm very happy with the outcome.

That's gloss black? Looks satin in that pic. But maybe it's because your car is black. IDK. Either way, it looks better, no doubt about that.

Looking forward to seeing it in person next month.

Just an update...

I am thinking about changing up my license plate. I had a specialty plate on my previous G and loved it.

This is the one I have on my car now, the standard issued KY plate.

These are the other options:

I had this one on my white G and it looked great because the white plate blended pretty well with the white G.

Co workers think that this one would look good.

Those were the ones I was considering, but here is the link to the plates if you think there is another one I should consider.

I like the standard issue plate. The way the color fades, it's very appealing. The second one isn't bad, either, with the tie-in to horse racing.

"Friends of Coal"... Haha, no. Can't imagine why you would put that on your car.

The only reason I was considering the Friends of Coal plate is because its black and thought it would go well with the black car.

Maybe if you got out a little paint, and customize it a bit...
