How to solve problem of 20 inch tires wearing out quickly...

Ok, so I put 20 inch rims on my G. The outside tread has worn more quickly than the rest of the tread (specifically on the front tires). The dealer said it was due to my tire being wider than stock. 245/35/20 is my tire size.

My question is, what size r20 tire should I get to help with the premature wear on my tread? Or is this just part of the territory with an aftermarket type size?

I have a G37S, came with 19s from factory.

The tire being wider is not the cause. Poor alignment will cause your issue, specifically camber.

There is no stopping outside shoulder wear if you drive con brio. You can reduce the wear with more negative camber. Unfortunately, the stock front suspension is not adjustable for camber (or caster). You have to buy and install adjustable upper control arms. That was my first mod. I run -2 degrees with almost zero toe-in.

What width are your 20s? Do you have a drop or are you still at factory height?

How much did the adjustable upper arm controls set you back?

Stock height, wheels 8.5" wide

Shouldn't need adjustable front arms if you don't plan to drop. 245s on 8.5" width wheels is just fine, maybe tire pressures weren't correct or you were really tearing it up on the streets
Be sure to get an alignment done if you've done anything that would change your alignment like jacking your wheel on a pothole, curbing, etc or if you aren't the original owner. Never hurts just to get it done to make sure all is well under there

I think the G needs more negative camber in front. I purchased the SPL upper control arm. It looked to have the best engineering. A lot of guys go cheaper with the SPC arms.

Camber will cause wear, just not as quickly and severe as toe being off.

Camber indeed causes wear.

Since it's the fronts I would look at the ball joints, or control arm/other bushings being out of spec. Could even be old sagging springs or bad struts.

There are hundreds of links you can click on in that one link alone. It is not just random info. Camber does cause wear. I've seen it first hand on my own car.

And you FACTS edit completely disproves you.

-1.5 is just about in spec, it's the heavier camber that will cause quicker wear over time, BMWs are set to at least -1.5 or higher from the factory. And I think we can all agree that toe will cause drastic tire wear in a shorter time frame when out of adjustment.

Let's see your alignment report showing castor and toe in spec and all that camber wear. I've been driving lowered cars for 20 years. Camber wear, if everything else is good, will barely be noticeable.

Guys, guys! Just remember this paraphrase of Maud'dib: toe is the tire killer.
