G37x (AWD) Coil-overs redux

This is an AWD version adapted from Slartibartfast's RWD thread. I've quoted some of his considerations below as I think they are a valuable. Obviously there are FAR fewer options available for AWD applications, but I did my best to cover as much as I could find. If you have answers to blank areas feel free to message me and I will update (or ADMINs just add it in). I haven't quite zero'd in on how to appropriately estimate front/rear frequency ratio based on spring rates as Slarti has or how spring location (OEM vs. True) affects estimating that since that has (or should) impact rear spring rate.

Slartibartfast:
[1]Separate height adjustment is better. Without it, changing spring perch height affects spring preload and damper rod position in the shock body, potentially taking it out of normal damping range.
[2] Front/rear frequency ratio should not be 1:1 as this promotes a hobbyhorse effect when hitting bumps. Don’t have frequency data so have to infer from spring rates.
[3] Spring diameter is helpful if you wish to change spring rates.
[4] Aluminum bodies to reduce weight. Half this weight is sprung, the other half unsprung.
[5] Heaviest part of shock is attached to vehicle instead of hub. Unsprung weight is the same for calculation purposes but mass accelerated over bumps is lower.

1 kg/mm = 55.8 lb/in

Thanks for posting this.

Can you post approximate prices too?

also for the stance ones, there may be an issue with the rear dampers being too short if its for the 1st gen g35 and not the 2nd gen.

No problem. I updated it with general prices. Add-ons or customization will obviously add to the overall costs. I'm sure in many cases reaching out to vendors on this site can be more specific and perhaps even provide a better rate.

Yes you're right about the rear dampers being short, here is the link to where this is discussed in another thread: https://www.myg37.com/forums/brakes-...options-9.html

I feel like coilovers were listed for our platform as direct fit when Stance had the SS coilovers but with the update to XR its not exact but still workable as long as one is communicating what is needed from Stance.

By the by, I used "redux" in my thread title because that thread was my second attempt at the list.

I am familiar with the term, I wasn't sure of your exact intention of it's use, however found it to fit insomuch as to "bring back" or make a second attempt (albeit not mine) at the AWD coilover thread.

I appreciate the sticky...hopefully it's helpful.

Fear not, it is helpful. I hadn't realized there had been an earlier attempt at this list.

Updated the list, Godspeed : Scale : Silver's : TruHart

I think that covers about everything for the X, both readily known and obscure.

Take a look at Broadway Static. They customize Fortune dampers, maybe they will work with the AWD dampers.

I remember perusing their website previously, looked like they put out a pretty nice product. I will shoot them an email to see what they might be able to offer for AWD.

Thanks for the update, I never heard of a number of those options even after readign so many threads on here...for the Truehart ones I found this info:

The TruHart StreetPlus Coilover system is a full monotube design coilover with integrated aluminum top mounts. The StreetPlus coilover is an ideal solution for today's budget-minded tuner looking to lower their vehicle and increase handling performance. The independently adjustable lower mount allows fine tuning of a vehicle's height without sacrificing shock travel, resulting in a sporty yet comfortable ride on the street or strip. These coilovers do not have damper adjustments.

Fitment:
Twin Tube Shock Design
Separate Pre-Load Spring
Adjustable mount for ride height adjustment
Powder Coated shock bodies & Anodized Lock Rings for durability
Top-Hats or Camber Top-Plates included where applicable
Fitment:
Infiniti G37X 06-13

Yeah much of the same was listed on their website also. Unfortunately they didn't list much of the information I wanted to know (i.e. coilover type, spring rates, amount of adjustment, etc.). It didnt give me a lot of confidence in their product but for sake of being thorough I included it in the list. I did actually send an email to Truhart asking for more info, if they respond I'll update it here.

From Brandon at TruHart (I also updated the initial post to reflect details discussed):

The I803 coilovers convert the rear to a one piece coilover, the picture on our website is the actual coilovers for your vehicle. The top mounts are solid aluminum mounts. All of our streetplus coilovers use linear dampening which is nonadjustable. We used our sister company’s, D2 racing, coilover’s average settings and set up our streetplus dampening to that dampening since most people find a dampening setting they like and then never adjust it again. Streetplus coilovers are only ride height adjustable they do not have dampening adjustiblity. Ride height can be adjusted roughly from 1.25in-3.5in from stock ride height on average for the streetplus line. The coilovers are rebuildable in the sense that we sell all the parts to repair the coilovers, and replacement shocks are $70each. The spring rates for the I803 are 16K front 8.7K rear.

Thanks!

That's great info. I find the front rates rather steep along with the rate step between the front and rear. An aftermarket rear sway bar will probably be needed to restore a more neutral behavior in turns.

I agree. The front rates in most applications seem a little high to me. I intend to take some measurements and attempt some calculations once I get home from vacation and see if I can come up with a reasonable idea as to what spring rates may be most appropriate (in conjunction with properly setup dampers). I'd like to achieve flat ride with rear frequency being approx. 20-25% higher than the front. I have Hotchkis F&R sway bars, both allow some adjustability. I also still have my OEM bars stored away in the event the need would arise to soften further. I've been intrigued by the idea that bigger/stiffer stabilizer bars may give a stronger feeling of control while actually reducing grip insomuch as it reduces the independence of the suspension.

I wonder if theyre higher bc of the added weight of the tranfer case up front
