Brake pads for normal 2009 G37 Journey
Hey I'm shopping around and i can't quite find the right brakes..
Right off the bat, dealer says I'm around 5mm on the front, and 2mm in the rear. I have over 50K on these brakes, and they are the oem stock ones. Its been 6 years, so i should just replace them all around. I'm looking for a brake that is better than my stock one(all around), otherwise i may just buy the stock parts again. Do I have to resurface the stock rotors? Can anybody provide me any reference to "right" part numbers or verify that I'm right? From browsing the forum, it looked like "Akebono Performance Pads (ASP905)", or "Hawk Performance Street 5.0 Pads ( HB370B.559)" were a good bet, but they only have rear pads. No front ... So now i'm torn between these 3 -Akebono Cermaic Pads ACT1287 (front) & ACT905 (rear) -Hawk HPS Street brake pads HB599F.616 (front) & HB370F.559 (rear) -Hawk Performance Ceramic Pads HB599Z.616 (front) & HB370Z.559 (rear) :dunno: |

Have your rotors checked for thickness. If they're thick enough, you do want them turned before putting new pads against them. This will make the new pads last a little longer and will remove the old pad material embedded into the rotor surface. Don't forget to bed in your brakes! Plenty of how-tos on the 'net.

I don't plan on pushing the G on a track hard. I do however drive spiritedly, getting 15mpg, without pushing the brakes often. I just want super stopping power when i need it.. Like if someone cuts me off "accidentally"
Are the OEM brakes ceramic or composite? Would the Hawk Performance Ceramic pads ( HB599Z.616 & HB370Z.559) be any good? Or should i just go for the HPS? Or should i mix up HPS front + HPS5.0 Rear? |

Going with the Hawks HPS front & rear for this time. I received the brakes and it seems to have come with shims already attached to it.
Seems okay to discard or store away the old brake pad parts? |
Ive got stock akebono sport brakes too with slotted and drilled rotors. I'm in the same boat trying to figure out what pads to get.
|
So why does this doods brakes squeal?
I hope yours don't do that bud. Maybe he did something wrong? |
I got the HPS installed. So far no squeal. Hopefully it won't show up. The feeling of the brakes is not night/day difference compared to the OEM ones. My reverse does not squeal for sure anymore :)
|
Nice! Glad to hear . I've got slotted and drilled rotors waiting to be installed, then maybe some HPS. Hope they don't squawk or get noisy on these rotors?
|
I'm a fan of duralast fully ceramic brake pads. Haven't read any issues about squeaking or anything.
|
To just give a update after driving on these brake pads for a few thousand miles, they squeak way too much and bedding them in only helps for a while.
Basically, if you bed the brakes in (fast, hard brake, fast, hard brake), the squeaking stops completely. After a few days the squeaks come back. The squeaks only happen when you light break, or when you come to a complete stop where it bites & holds the rotors. If you do any kind of harder brake, you do not have any squeaks. I suspect because i like to roll to a stop or only do light brakes, its cleaning the pad of the "bedded" material & making it squeeaak.. Anybody else having this problem? I'm going to see how long i can live with this before i do another brake pad swap.. |
Damn, that sucks. I went with Centric Premium Rotors and Posi-quiet pads. No squeal so far after a thousand miles. I heard about how the Hawks squeal, which is why I didn't get them. Hopefully you can just deal with it for now...

masterdukill, did you apply CRC caliper grease (or similar) to all the metal on metal contact areas?
|
Yup a bunch of that grease was applied. For now, I'm starting to brake hard a few times exiting the freeway late at night. This is my temporarily work around until i burn the pads or the wheels lol.
