Painting Brake Calipers
Onto the next project....
I picked up my G as a commuter car to replace my TSX and can't stop doing "little projects" on it. Several were obvious- tint and adding a sub. Others are purely cosmetic like LED bulbs, illuminated kick plates, and LED DRLs. This next project falls into the latter category. I want to try painting the brake calipers. Two questions- 1. What color for the paint? I've got stock wheels with no intention of replacing them. What would look good with the red exterior I've got? I've thought about yellow or blue but worry that it might be a bit too much for the car. 2. Any suggestions on brand/type of paint? Thanks! |

Red calipers are the standard for calipers, and the fact that it would match your car is just icing on the cake. I used VHT paint on my car (available from autozone) , put the akebono decals on, and then a layer of VHT clearcoat.

KEG, you have the small calipers right?, I think I'd only paint the big Akebonos the brighter colors since those big bad boys scream for attention :)
Don't really want to bring to much attention to the base calipers but a nice blend looks good. I painted mine gloss black w/ VHT caliper paint a couple years ago w/ a logo sticker and still is holding up well. If you have the big Akebonos then disregard my reply and paint 'em big & bold :) http://imageshack.us/a/img853/8854/69f.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img198/7629/9z3.JPG |
Great call. I do have the small calipers since it's a xS. The black looks nice...very nice!

Totally agreed with blnewt about the small calipers, I'm about to paint mine black as well.

Whatever you choose to do make sure you take your time and give the calipers a thorough cleaning before attempting any sort of paint. This is a set I did for one of my customers

JPSBlack, as always, your work always raises the bar higher & higher. With all the cool painting you do for all these accessories how do you have time for your full time painting job?

JPSBLACKG37 painting the hats of a 2-part rotor... excellent idea, and what looks like real quality work. Man, you sure don't lack for generosity with that clear-coat. You've also got a knack for macro shots. It's nice to see high-quality pictures like this on the forum. OP, you've got the little brakes. Just paint them black. Not even gloss black, just satin. |
The calipers were stripped and sandblasted, thoroughly cleaned, then applied an adhesion promoter, followed by a custom spies Hecker blue metallic basecoat, and white pearl In the clearcoat.
As for time, man you have no idea.. I work @ 3am to 8am on the cool stuff, then from 8 to 5 at the bodyshop, then after work if I have stuff to prep I do it at home, then go to bed early. Lol repairing cars back to stock gets old after awhile which is why I choose to do the cool stuff. Rochester thanks! I think the pictures are the most important! Everything looks great from far away, I like to showcase what I paint as close as possible |
