Can't Paint Grille?

Hey guys,

I have recently taken my car to a shop to get an appraisal on getting my grille painted gloss black.

They said chrome can't be painted because it would chip...

So. How do you all get yours gloss black? I thought you could paint chrome, but I could be wrong.

Thanks.

Just sand down the chrome, apply a primer, and then your color of choice. That's weird a shop said they couldn't do it.

This^^
There's also adhesion promoters that help when painting on top of smooth plastic.

So, looks like I'll be taking my business elsewhere if they said they couldn't do it. Anyone know a price I should be looking for just incase they over price me? Looking to do a gloss black on a white emblem.

Anywhere from $50 to $150. I wouldn't pay more than $80 for it but I also did mine myself and while it looks a decent, a shop could probably do better.

Also when doing the emblem, don't just paint the whole emblem white, it will look bad, you'll need to do the sides in black and just the front of the emblem white. Here's mine in carbon wrap but you get the idea

Your masking skills are impressive.

Just talked to another shop, they said if they paint it, there's a good chance it may chip because it is going to be painted on a chrome surface? Wth!?

True, take a look at your chrome grill, I doubt it's perfect, my 07 grill had plenty of dings, it's in a very chip-prone place on the car. Even my vinyl wrap grill has a couple chips out of the vinyl from rocks :(

I'm aware that rocks will more than likely hit it, but will it "flake" off?

It likely will chip no matter how your prime it. Imagine rocks repeatedly hitting the grille head on at 80+mph. I recommend vinyl or splurge for the midnight grille. I just bought the midnight grille and have my coupe grille in the garage. I will likely be listing it for sale soon if you are interested in buying a spare to wrap in vinyl before hand.
