Does anyone know how I can take off the trims or does anyone recall a DIY for this that I can't find, so I can paint them?

so you can just pull them right off

what kind of clips hold them in?

The clips are small, and molded as part of the fog ring, on the clock at 2, 4, 8 and 10. (see pic below)

Some people have success popping them off from the outside. I've never been able to do that.

Turn the wheel into the car, remove some of the clips from the wheelwell plastic, pull the liner out of the way, reach in with a flashlight, and be prepared to get scratched up.
