Finally ready to upgrade stock Bose stereo system
 

I have two payments left and then I'm a free man!
I have a 2008 G37 Sport Coupe.

Evidently, I've been pleased enough with the sound that I've kept it stock the past 6 years.
I'm coming from a previous system with the Pioneer 80PRS hooked up to an active 2-way system.

The stock stereo is honestly not bad at all. It covers general spectrum of all music quite well (I listen to all genres - hiphop,techno,rock,jazz,funk,blues,latin,reggae,et c.)
However, to me I think it's lacking in detail in the high-end and adding a sub-stage would be desirable for me.
I don't think the Coupe has the built-in sub like the Sedan does.

That said, I plan on leaving the 10's in the doors. I like the bass response and I feel like I only need to upgrade the details in the highs.
So it seems like there's a 1" inch tweeter by the side mirror and a 3" inch speaker next to the door handle.

I'm not sure where to start first.

1. Do I start by upgrading the 1-inch tweeters? The stock Bose Amp first?
2. Should I just replace both 1-inch and 3-inch in the doors?
3. Has anyone changed only the 1-inch tweeters or just only the amp? What are your thoughts?

Also our trunks are small - has anyone fit a 12" in our trunks? Do I need to settle for a 10-inch sub?
If I can't fit a IDQ 12" - I was looking at Dayton HO 12" because it supposedly does very well in a small enclosure:

i added a powered sub and use the Viper4Android audio processing app to overcome the muffled sound on the high end. sounds great now with the factory Bose system - didn't really feel like tearing the car apart and replacing everything ....

V4A app only works on rooted Android devices, though. another easy way might be to add a DSP unit so you can fix the EQ the Bose amp applies (which is what kills the audio quality).

How big is the sub and the box?
Fits nicely in trunk ?

its just a Kicker 10" powered sub in a sealed box from Best Buy. fits fine.

had it in my last car, so threw it in the G. its a sealed enclosure - i like my bass tight and responsive because i listen to thrash/metal. didn't want a sloppy boomy ported enclosure, but depending on what music you listen to, maybe you do.
its not going to shake the neighborhood, but i didn't want it to. it definitely is the biggest improvement you can make to the factory audio system, though.

Oh yea - nice small profile.
Powered and all.
If my setup gets too complex I may go this route (just to get something in there for now).

its easy to remove if you need extra space (just unplug the main connector and the plug for the remote bass adjustment).

next car will probably get a better sub - maybe a JL Audio powered one, but i already had the Kicker and it works fine for what i needed it for.

Like you I'm looking to slightly modify my stock Bose in the Spring leaving most of it intact.

I've had the car just over a year and listen to mostly dubstep/rap with some jazz, blue, vocals, etc. along with several demos disks (i.e. Focal). The system is actually quite loud and the bass from the doors is impressive. For a lot of music the low bass is acceptable, however if lacking in the recording there's no way to add it. There's an in-depth analysis of the stock system here (search) indicating very flat response, however the 3" door speakers break up and need to have a 12 db high pass installed at 4.5 KHz - this might change the highs if they're overpowered by the mids. To me, the sound is natural and I don't need sizzling highs in my car at my age, I also don't need to impress the person in the car next to me so overall volume is adequate.

My plan:
Build crossover for the mids, possibly highs
Add sub to trunk with amp (Alpine 12" Type R in 1 ft sealed)
Use my AudioControl LCQ-1 both as a high level converter for my sub (Zapco) amp and as a way to remotely control the sub volume.
