12v cigarette white and black wire in to fuse box.

12v cigarette white and black wire in to fuse box.
so im trying to tap in my cutsouts 12v cigarettes power cord in to my fuse box but when i cut it open the wires are white and black. witch wire is the positive and witch is the ground. or is this not how these wires work because i saw a guy just get 12v extender plug that cigarette light plug in to that and then cut open then extenders wires witch were black and red. ive looked online and it say black to red and and white to black is this correct.

Place the negative black multimeter test lead on ground and touch the red positive test lead to each of the white and black wires. The one that reads 12v is the positive one.
A test lamp can work also.
