was anyone able to successfully pull out the software off the HD?

ive been wanting to play with it, but im too chicken to take the dash apart

C'mon, taking the dash apart is the easy part of it all...

Just take the darn HD out, hack it, copy it, map it, or whatever it is you smart guys do... and then share the news!

The dash is the easy part. Follow the appropriate instuctions here to take out the LCD:

After that, there are two more screws to remove at the bottom of the head unit, then the whole thing comes out. The head unit takes about 5 minutes to remove.

Taking the hard drive out of the head unit is the tricky part.;)

The issue with the computer engineer is he can only count to 1. Probably unlikely able to pull backing this stuff up. I would like to finish figuring out if you can back up your hard drive. But don't want to risk my car. Anyone here or know some junk yard dogs. Maybe someone with a nav system in a demolished car. First thing to do is a simple bit by bit image using acronis. If that fails to work then nissan is locking out sectors with the controller on the hard drive itself. Not uncommon to do, kinda how ps3 discs work. This will take me sometime to work around.

Yeah, I know this is an old thread but did anyone ever get around to getting a dump of the filesystem? Really curious about the filesystem on it and whether or not it could be manipulated. I'm also wondering how dependent all of the software is on the hard drive or not. If most of it resides on the harddrive, it would be interesting to see if we could build an upgrade to get newer software from newer cars. I just picked up a G37 and I love tearing things apart but I'd like to see if someone's done it first.

Anyone have a broken Nav system they'd want to donate the drive from for science? :)

I doubt any computer engineer would like to rip his own G37's dash apart, and live without a stereo in his / her car for the amount of time to figure this out.

I have a 2012 G37 with what sounds like the same crippled Clarion system. Chances are they encrypted it. How else would there not already be torrents you could download to unlock new features.

Im curious to know if the UMR in your name is for the University of Missouri at Rolla or University of Minnesota at Rochester or something altogether different?

The only problem with this mod is the password in the hard drive. figure that out and you can clone it. Progress was made in the GTR's hard drive system, the password was figured out here. CompactFlash Music Player / Music Box limitation - Page 5 - Electronics & A/V Systems - GT-R Life I asked if the password is the same for the g37 since they share the same maker but so far no response.

Given the proliferation of mp3's these days, is the music box function even viable? If we could store mp3's on it, that would be great, but doesn't appear to function that way. I use my cd player so much, I don't even know if it reads disks or not.

Ok. let's bring this thread up again.
So i removed the AV/Navigation unit from my sedan today.
Removing the unit from the car... easy.
Removing the HDD from the unit... incredibly hard.
I never encounter such a complicated unit in my life... and i have more than 15 years experience working with electronic devices... an industrial computer dissansemble is a piece of cake comparing with this "clarion" unit.

OK. so i toke out the HDD. Is a regular Toshiba 40GB 2.5' IDE HDD. Nothing special about it till now.
I assembled the unit back, without HDD and puth it back on the car.

SURPRISE!!!
No more fuel indication,
the dashboard lights were on night mode, no matter what i do, engine CEL light, Immobiliser light on,
popup hood (airbag) light on,
radio works, but can't change stations
no radio info on the screen,
Climate control works but climate display have different graphics.
Now, the best one: can turn on the engine, but when i turn off the car, the dash board turn off, but the engine does NOT TURN OFF!!!

After i unplugged the unit from the dash, the engine went off.

Ok. Now let's take a luck at the HDD:
My intention, to replace the HDD with a IDE SSD

Connected the HDD to windows PC:
-windows ask for HDD initialization MBR of GPT.. HELL NO!!!!

So i switched to my Linux PC.
Linux detected the HDD ok.
Then i tried to make a image from that HDD.
Asked for the HDD password...
Search... found this: CompactFlash Music Player / Music Box limitation - Page 5 - Electronics & A/V Systems - GT-R Life
HDD password on GTR: "046-259-1300" + 20 spaces

Not so fast... G37x use a different password :(

So i puth the HDD back into the unit, installed the unit back on the car, then everything went back to normal... except the CEL light that i had to reset with the consult 3 interface.
