for me cost then how long each one lasts say when the oil starts to go dark, and maybe I'll take into account performance wise. Used a pennzoil oil filter once and it was crap swap it out with k&n and the car felt different maybe it was a placebo effect?

My wife's R18 Civic used a larger filter than the G37, pretty crazy. I was able to use her filter size on the G without any issues.

Had 171796 miles on my 06 G35 when I traded it in. Engine ran like new.
Did 53 oil changes every 3 to 4k miles. Nissan Oil Filters and whatever 5w-30 oil was on sale. No Synthetic.

I've used regular fram filters on every car I've owned. Never had any issues, oil brand and type is more important.

Like Telcoman and MitchG37 I use whatever conventional oil is on sale and still a name brand. I usually get a package deal which includes a lower end oil filter which includes Fram, Microgaurd (O'reilly's house brand), STP, and Advance Auto house brand.

Are there superior filters and oils out there? Yes, without a doubt. Given what I subject my car to which is mostly rush hour highway jockying and a redline blast here and there I don't sweat it.

Thanks guys for the information. I have been trying to cross reference oil filters that will fit on 4 cars and now I found that I can use the K&N 1010 on all of them. Initially, I was concerned that the reason that Infiniti used the 1008 filter which is much shorter was because of the clearance to the underbody cover. I have the ZSPEED one, which is metal.

I was in Pep Boys today looking to pick up a couple Purolator PureONE filters, when I saw these on the shelf. Looks like a new product designed specifically for synthetic oil. They were priced at $9.99, about $3 more than the PureONE filters. They advertise higher mileage but from what I've seen/read, the PureONE can handle extended OCIs well. Worth the extra coin or just marketing hype? Any thoughts?

With the wire mesh, it should be more robust and probably will handle filtration for 10K miles. Not sure if anyone here goes that long w/o changing oil, but it's pom.

I've used Amsoil Ea filters and oil for 20 years and never had an issue. I've run my oil as long as 19,000 miles with an Amsoil filter. Admittedly, that is about 4k miles over what it's rated for, but I experienced no issues whatsoever.

If you decide to do longer drain intervals, please check your oil level monthly and top off as necessary. Oil will burn off with longer intervals if it's not topped off and you can be left with two quarts of oil which is not enough. Just the nature of the beast, even in a well-maintained engine.

The Ea filters should be replaced every year or 15,000 miles, whichever comes first.

That's a VERY long interval. I was under the impression that 7k was the max between oil changes and that the filter and oil change out on a 1 to 1 basis?

Yes, it is. And no issues as long as the oil and filter are up to the task. With Amsoil, you can change the filter only at 15,000 miles, and top off with another quart of oil and be good for another 15,000. As long as the oil's TBN (total base number) is still high enough, you're good to go. TBN is a measurement of the oil's reserve alkalinity which is used to control the acid byproducts formed through combustion.

I know oil brand choice is a lot like discussing politics and religion but I've stuck with Amsoil because they have the test data to back up their claims and usually spank most of the competition out there (in conditions that are far more severe than I'll ever put my car through).

This is an independent case study on a Mack truck that with 630,000 total miles that went 409,000 miles running Amsoil without an oil change. They tore the engine down and found very light wear.

This guy ran Amsoil in his van for 930,000 miles (doing extended oil change intervals) and upon teardown found the measurements for the engine to be within 1% of the manufacturer's OE specs. The transmission has over 1 million miles on it and has never been overhauled.
