The DEFINITIVE oil thread

So I got this creative idea to poll the myG37 community about the brand of oil they use in their G's. I know there are tons of threads on oil changes, etc....however, with this poll/thread, there will be a central location for members to vote in the poll about what type of oil they use and have had success with through Used Oil Analysis (if available). This will be helpful to car newbies learn from the experienced folks how to take care of our engine's lifeblood. Let the voting begin!

Just had my oil changed for the third time thursday. I'm at about 12K now so I made the switch to synthetic. They carry Mobil 1 at the dealer and everyone seems to like it so I just went with that. So far so good. And the price wasnt too bad over the conventional stuff.

Since it's a lease I go just go with premi maintenance but I would be using Mobil 1 at this point. I guess oil is oil but that was the first Synthetic brand I remember seeing ads for.

Read good things about German Castrol and Mobile1 for the VQ engine. Bought some German Castrol for oil change in a few days. Ordered a kit from Blackstone and will do the analysis when it gets in.

None of the above. With 3,750 mile change intervals, the bang for the buck oil, at least according to the oil co engineers I know, is a semi-synthetic 5W-30.

Just a little word that I was told by my mechanic/sponsor who is now a Nissan representative, that Eneos is the maker of the so called Nissan Ester Oil but that it is specially formulated for the VQ engine and it is not the same as the Semi-synthetic 5w-30. Eneos said that it is not available for purchase outside of Nissan/Infiniti at this point but that they are working on it. Guess that makes sense.

That's a very interesting bit of info. I know that Ester Oil is expensive as crap but if it was SPECIFICALLY made for the VQ, it might be tempting to use it....hmmmmm.

Anyone local to So-Cal can ask me for a kit from Blackstone; I have a case of them.

The Nissan Ester is not really made specifically for the VQ or VVEL. It is conventional 5W-30 motor oil with a carbon based additive. According to the European Patent Application, the carbon based additive is supposed to reduce friction and thereby improve fuel economy.

Now, Nissan added a "diamond-like" coating to the valve stems in the VVEL transformation. And, in Nissan's white paper, Nissan claims the carbon based additive in the Ester oil further reduces friction over the "diamond-like" valve stem coating.

You decide if this explanation means you should be using Ester oil.

Actually, my sponsor, OutPerformance Shop, spoke to Eneos regarding this oil and it was indeed make for the VQ engine and are working on being able to sell it, or variation thereof, without going through Nissan/Infiniti.
