Checkov, I'm sure all the friends you've made on this forum will miss you terribly.
Let's count them...
I was quoted $30 per side window to remove tint, and $40 per side window to apply it. The little corner-windows are half-cost. Flattened for the sales call, they quoted me $185 to service both back-sides of the car, since my only aftermarket tint is the rear doors on my Sedan. (And the rear window, but that's not applicable in NY.)
What they couldn't do was test the tint, because they don't have the gauge, which I thought was odd. But they did say they could tell me what is on the car just by looking at it. (It's a 3M film, BTW.)
At this point I'm thinking of just getting the car inspected in March and seeing what happens, if anything. Then deal with it.

What do you think... does this look like tint that allows 70% of the light? Seems like it to me, but IDK.

Thanks. BB's right, however... it's just a picture. It could be anything.
So 35% meaning what, that it allows for 65% light throughput? Funny how people (and shops, I assume) measure tint by how much light it blocks, when states refer to tint by how much light it allows.

In your case, according to the NY DMV website, it looks like the darkest tint you can have legally is 70%.

In the state of Kentucky the legal tint percentage is 20% rear window and rear side windows, and 35% front side windows, with no regulation on the strip on the front window except for how far down it comes on the window (I believe it's called the AS1 line). Which I think is pretty fair.
On my Volvo I have 20% all around with 50% on the entire front windshield, with a 20% strip on top of the 50%. It can be a little too dark if you're trying to navigate roads you're not familiar with, but since it's the car I drive back and forth to work in it's not a huge deal.
On the Q50 I just have 20% all around with nothing on the front, but I still need to add a strip. I may go as far as to add 80% or 70% to the entire front windshield for UV protection and to cut down the glare from incoming traffic, but I'm still not sure which route I'll take yet.
Sometimes window tinters will forgo a sticker or etching in the tint, usually on the drivers door where the glass manufacturers etching is, if the tint is not "legal" in the state in which it was tinted. It saves on liability of the tint shop. For instance if someone got into a wreck that had 5% tint all around and on the front windshield, like the mountain boys of Eastern KY, and the tint installer had their info on a sticker inside the door jam or etched on the tint they could get in trouble for installing illegal tint on a vehicle. Some places I've had tint my windows won't even give you a receipt if the windows are darker than legal for that very reason.
^^^ yup pretty much sums it up, here's a visual representation.

NY is so screwed, our only hope is a shop that DGAF or repeal of this idiotic law. I threw on 35% tints (the lightest ones at the shop) about a week before the law passed, ugh.
Edit: Rochester, looks like you have 35% tint (same as mine, also white G37). That means it blocks 65%, which means it won't pass inspection. The only legal tint in NY isn't worth putting on the car, unfortunately.

I had %20 rear and %35 until i was constantly pulled over. Decided to take off the fronts (bought a steamer and 45 min later) and drove with no front tints and kept the back as it was. I also just installed %50 for the fronts since i couldn't stand it being without it and then this strict law passed on 1/1/17. I really like %50 on my fronts as it's not too dark to get attention but is still somewhat darker then no tints.

Really sucks planning contingencies. Five years ago, I bought the car with the two rear windows already tinted in New Jersey, limo-style, I suppose. I've never ever been pulled over for it, and all 5 inspections since that day passed just fine here in New York at my local Infiniti dealership. Now all of a sudden I have to prepare for a problem. I love NY, but man this is just dumb.

Getting the car inspected right now, and was told upfront that it will fail unless they remove the tint from the rear doors. Hard stop.
Fcking miserable about this.
They just drove it away to their detail shop... $31 per door. (Sigh) the money is irrelevant, it's the illogical principle of it all that makes me mad and powerless. I'm tempted to pay the tint shop to re-tint the back windows afterwards, but with the new law it might make me more of a traffic stop target than I was in past years.

Just got mine completed at 20% all around. Got a discount on some metallic heat resistant stuff. $70 more than standard so I said why not? Luckily in MD, once inspected and tagged the car is good to go and no additional safety inspections are needed. Emissions every 2 years, which in our case, is hooking an OBDII up and as long as no codes are thrown you're good to go.
Gotta say, for 20% they don't look that much darker than what was on my Mazda (35%)...Not a big deal, but just surprising with other posts of 20% tint that look much darker than mine.
