Map Update

Map Update
This has been covered somewhat. I noticed that the 2010 and up cars use the 5 DVD system that the customer can install without dealer assistance. However, the 2009, which is the same car, cannot do the same. Has anyone with a 2009 purchase the 5 DVD set to see if it will allow the installation to go through? I searched and I did not find the answer to that specific question. I understand that you have to enter the ID from the HU and the code is burned into the software to allow the installation. How will the software know the year of the car, unless the 2010 and up cars had a unique identifier to designate 2010+ cars, versus the <2010 cars. Someone has to know the answer to what I just stated.

According to this TSB, the pre-2010 G37 uses a different procedure from 2010+ cars to update the nav maps. Which is why the dealership is needed to update.

So to kind of answer your question, it appears the user-installable 5 DVD set will not work with pre-2010 cars.

If you go to infiniti.naviagation.com and try to purchase an upgrade for a 2009 G, they tell you, "Please note: You are purchasing a non-refundable map update activation code that must be used at your local Nissan dealer to install the map update. Contact your dealer to schedule an appointment. Additional installation fees may apply."
When you buy for a 2010 and up, it takes you to the 5 DVD site. I think they burn the DVDs with your head unit ID. Not only is it year specific, but it is specific to your car so you don't pass the update around to others.
I believe they changed the software in 2010. A 2009 doesn't have the ability to self-load the map data.
