TwinSnails I felt the same way after I installed my takeda LTCAI. "Pulled like a freight train" is exactly how I would describe it (if I possessed your wizardry with words) compared to the nearly dissappointing pull/power I felt when I 1st got the car. Thank you sir for voicing my EXACT thoughts n opinion.

I installed my Takeda and there was definitely a gain. Where it used to be anemic (with stock intakes) on the way to redline, it now pulls harder than a freight train and would happily spool to 8,000 rpm if the bottom end was built.
I've never heard of anyone buying an intake primarily for sound. That's just a fringe benefit, but after an exhaust is installed, you never hear the intakes anyway.
Not buying that they add and do absolutely nothing.

A CAI is one of the upgrades needed if you want to make the full potential of the NA engine. The Gen3 really shines above 6500 RPM so if you are pussyfooting about I can see how you probably feel you have "wasted" your money.
A true waste of money, IMO, would be a muffler delete.

By themselves, sound only and may even decrease power. I'd rather have my car be fast than sound fast. Sounding fast and not having the power to match is busch league and fake. Lipstick on a pig anyone?

I love a good intake thread 
The stock air boxes work pretty good. They are sealed, and pull relatively "cool" air from where they are located. At stockish power levels, they aren't a major restriction. That's not to say an intake--or even post MAF tubes and drop ins--can't add power, noise and look better, especially when combined with exhaust and a tune.
The question becomes: is that extra power, mostly at the top of the tachometer, worth $500-600, and is it worth the extra $$ on a tune to get the most out of it?
For some people, they answer is absolutely.
Some people say yes and no, and pick up a gently used one in the classifieds
For others, the answer is nope.
We all have different goals for our cars. I'm not chasing ever last HP on my G37, so I rock Cobb Post MAF tubes and drop in filters. If I leave 10 HP (or more) on the table

All other things being equal (same G37 model, same gas (premium), no tune, same driver skill, etc.) a car with drop in's and post MAV tubes will beat a car with CAI's where the air is drawn from the engine compartment - every time. Especially if the CAI uses a paper filter.
The cooler, dryer are through the stock intake is the difference.
Now if you guys were talking about a CAI that changes the physics of where it grabs the air like the below... that would change things quite a bit...
