Best G37 Sport 2dr (Newbie looking to buy)
I sold my 1992 300ZX "summer car" 6 years ago for my current daily driver, a 2010 Civic Si.
6 years later I seriously miss the sound and the torque of a solid V6 powerplant, and Nissan has been making some very nice V6's like the 3.7*L*VQ37VHR.
I've been looking at the 2009+ model G37 Sport coupes. I really like the 2011+ facelift. This seems like it's the car for me, having everything I miss.
However, like all cars certain years had certain issues. Certain years are just better. I've been away from Nissan so I have no clue about the current reliability and longevity of current powertrains.
BTW, I like 5 speed & 6MT's but I'm not totally against Paddle shifters.
Q. Which are the best G37 years, for tranny reliability, engine reliability, electrical, etc.????
Q. Does the tranny share components with the 350Z or 370Z...I heard the 350Z is a pain to get into 3rd gear.
Thanks for any info.

The earlier models have been prone to failure due to the rear timing cover gasket being made out of paper and a repair can cost anywhere from $2k to $3k. Newer models (2012 onward I believe but possibly some late 2011 models) have been updated with the metal gaskets and don't have the same issue.
See this thread for more on the issue: https://www.myg37.com/forums/g37-cou...xperience.html
The other issue is the CSC that seems to go out which can be a pain to replace since you have to drop the tranny to replace it. Most people upgrade to the HD CSC (ZSpeed Performance Replacment HD Clutch CSC Heavy Duty Slave Cylinder Kit) when swapping out the OEM one. So far, I've only heard of 1 failure with the new HD CSC from ZSpeed.
Good luck and welcome to the forum!!

Welcome and I would also say a 2012 and up g37 rwd S and preferably 6 speed because the 7speed auto isn't all that great and fun, I mean it's reliable and all don't get me wrong and comfortable but I come from a coupe with 6 speed and now a sedan that has a 7 speed and I miss my manual! Good luck on your search!

Here is a general overview of the trim levels for consideration. keep in mind that these all come in 7AT or 6MT
Standard (or journey in older models) AWD RWD (7AT)
Standard features with most creature comforts available in packages
S Coupe AWD or RWD (6MT or 7AT.. 6MT is RWD only)
S Convertible RWD (6MT or 7AT)
Add sport suspension, sport 19 inch wheels (unless you get the "limited" which has IPL wheels) with wider rear tires/ rims than front, Sport brakes 4 piston calipers front/ 2 piston rear, quicker steering ratio, summer tires, firmer suspension, sport seats w/ thigh bolsters, Limited Slip Differential. Sport front bumper, sport side skirts
IPL Coupe RWD (6MT or 7AT)
IPL Convertible RWD (6MT or 7AT)
What the S has Plus sportier tuned suspension, 18 more HP (in the upper RPMs at higher speeds is where you would notice any difference), more aggressive aero kit, IPL exhaust system (true dual), IPL wheels
Most folks go with the "S" then mod it themselves to achieve greater gains than the stock IPL. You can mod the S or standard with the IPL aero kit..
If you can find a CPO IPL and you like the color choices (Malbec Black or graphite.. Malbec has more "purple" in it) and you dont plan to mod then that's the way to go.
If you plan to mod, I would go with the S

Other than a nice set of CCW Classics or SSR's I'm done wasting money on engines, tuning, accessories, etc.. A nice car is nice enough at my age. I want something fun, can hold my golf bag, and turns heads.
Now I have some serious research on models. The "S" sounds good... no, awesome, but AWD is useful where I am.
Thanks for the tech & tips. They are mission critical.

I would suggest budgeting a little money for lowering coils for a subtle drop as you will notice the wheel gap a lot more on this car with larger wheels.
Much success to you in your car shopping.

A 6Mt can be found in any year for a G37 2008 - 2015** ('14 and '15 was renamed Q60). The 6MT is automatically an "S". The 5AT and later the 7AT was only an S when the sport package was added. So that's probably where the separation between the two came from. But if either the AT or MT had the S badge they both had the same features available.
In the next generation Q60 apparently there will be no 6MT.
