Carbon Fiber Hood questions!

Hey all, kinda new to the site and had some quick questions about carbon fiber hoods. I have an 08 G37S, black obsidian.

I'm looking at hoods, not really for aesthetics, but for functionality. I would most likely get a CF hood that's the same as the stock one.

My question is this: Does the CF hood chip and scratch like a normal painted hood? I do alot of highway driving, and you know, stuff on the road kicks up and I see little nicks and chips all over the hood. I'm assuming the CF hood is not impervious to this, but is it less noticeable?

Also, I live in Florida, lovebug capital of the world (thanx UofF), I'm also guessing that the lovebugs won't eat the CF hood like it does paint. Anyone know for sure? Thanx in advance!

i dont have one, but my friend does on his eclipse. I would 3m it. It will chip if hit by a rock, but it would be as noticable as if paint was chipped

It will chip, it will scratch, and it will get faded over time. U can get it resprayed with clear but it's gonna cost u, but will hold up better. As fas as the lovebug? No clue lol.

Yea, Lovebugs are fabulous little creatures that were brought to this country by the University of Florida to kill mosquitos, they then "escaped" and flourished. They are attracted to heat when they are mating and will fly low to the ground on the roads. They then of course splatter all over your car, and their blood is acidic and will eat the paint off your car if it isn't cleaned. Great stuff!

Holy crap that's sucks. I guess its the same thing as bird crap. If u don't remove it right away then it eats ur clear coat up and you'll have wonderful dull spot. Lol.

that just seems like a ton of money for functionality... nothing wrong with doing it if it comes out ok and the bugs dont get it but that seems too high maintenance

When you live in Florida, love bug preventative maintenance becomes high maintenance! I drove from Lakeland to Vero Beach last week (90 mile trip) and had to stop and clean my windsheild 3 times going and 3 times coming back (RIDICULOUS!)

sometimes you'll see a white car with a black front end.. it's not paint.. it's all dead lovebugs stuck to the car.. they are not fun.. we'll send you some in L.A.!

thankfully though, they only live a few weeks, and love bug season lasts a month or so

If you're looking for functionality you'll be disappointed. The OEM hood is aluminum and that makes it pretty light already. You'll save 2 or 3 pounds at most by going CF. It will chip and scratch just like anything, I highly recommend you have it clear coated or it will look like crap in 5 months. I have a seibon CF hood and I'm fairly happy with it, the reason I say fairly is because the weave is a nice 2x2 twill but fitment is not perfect.
